Show ti tit r t x o Y is wt Danger 1 Threatens t the tae e Camp The appropriation bill providing funds for the payment of railroad railroad railroad rail rail- road fare for citizens enlisting for the military training camp has not been signed by the president and until it is signed it will be impossible ble t to send tra transportation to those men living at a distance from Salt Sal t Lake City If there is much more moie delay it is is possible that some of the men men may not feel like buying their own tickets with the prospect of being reimbursed later by the government although ugh this plan seems perfectly perfectly per per- feasible It is highly possible that hat some of 01 the men who have enlisted will withdraw their names or ask to be excused if the transportation transportation transportation trans trans- problem is not settled in a day daJ or two Should this delay cause any falling off in attendance Salt Lake City ought to make every effort to tOmake make up for up-for for the lossA loss A A good many of the cities such as Ogden Denver Butte an and Logan Loga have put all the responsibility on Salt Lake The cards arc are arcon arcon on the table now Those cities have shown sho they do n not t care anything abo about t th the United States government or or its military military preparedness Th They y are so afraid that a big encampment here would prove o of som some some benefit benefit to Salt Lake that they are forgetting all ideas of duty and patriotism and loyalty to their government nt They have made their bed now let them lie in it Since the they have left Salt Lake to fight out the battle alone practically Salt Sal Lake certainly cannot afford to fall down and let them have the laugh on on her There are going to be some withdrawals among those who have hav t enlisted for the en encampment and if there is much longer delay about abou the signing of the appropriation bill we are dreadfully afraid that tha the attendance will viII be seriously kept down from outside points After all aU the talking we have done here it would be a shame t tsee to see the camp wind up with only three or four hundred citizens To give absolute assurance of success to repay the army for th the keen interest it has taken in in this intermountain camp we would like to have Salt Lake employers consider this question very seriously H and those who have not sent men to the camp should at once have them enlist Men who can leave their own business and go would d dwell do dowell dowell well to enlist now This will be undoubtedly the best conducted cam camp in the country In the first place the army officers have had a gre great t deal of experience experience ence with other camps and that experience will prove very valuable e h here liere re In the next place this is the first camp where men have been bee housed in such barracks splendid I I This means that the recruits recruit will have have have-a a maximum of efficient efficiency in their studies of the war game They will be well taken care of and will perhaps have more mor officers proportionately for instruction than any ny other camp has ha enjoyed Some of the very best officers in the United States army have hav been detailed for the work here Aside from the pleasure an honest American must feel in knowing knowing knowing know know- ing that he is in at least a small measure repaying his great government government government govern govern- ment for some of the numerous blessings that government has lIas bestowed bestowed bestowed be be- stowed upon him there is a selfish point that needs needs to to be considered The business or professional man spends most of his time in the office and he and he is always promising himself and his family that he is going to get himself in good physical trim He lie always really believes that he is going to join the gymnasium the next week or he is is going to begin to play golf or he is going to go to the woods and fish and hunt or he lie is going to begin to take aKe long walks or swim or take daily exercise in his room room but but ho seldom does it If he starts one day he stops the next At Fort Douglas there will be systematized training The recruit will arise at 5 30 have a a nice cold eold shower take some light exercises and a walk and then he will enjoy hi his breakfast at 7 clock o 0 Afterwards li lie e will go through systematic drilling and marching marching marching march march- ing and other outdoor exercise that is certain to benefit an office man We can conceive of no more profitable way to spend a vacation If Tf a business man or a professional man man wants to keep in touch with his office he can do so if he lives in the city He is excused at noon Saturday so he can attend to his own own affairs Saturday afternoon and Saturday night and p put t in in all the time he wants to Sunday arou around d his office At other r times w when len lenI I business calls calls' him he can leave after 4 in the afternoon and comedown come conie come comedown down town I It Itis is an ideal arrangement for a Salt Salt Laker and many many men who hesitate about joining will probably be sorry they didn't j join in the camp when camp when they find how really beneficial it is We wish that Salt Lake would show shop the nation that it it-is it is a real American city eity and dispel the idea the East Bast has abo about t everything in Utah believing that it is against the government Salt Lake has lias a great chance We hope that it will take advant advantage advantage ad ad- vant vantage ge of it If many of the outsiders withdraw their names and the camp drops back baek to a class of three or four hundred it will look pretty bad for Salt Lake as well as as' the as-the the the- rest of the intermountain country There are over three thre hundred regular army officers and soldiers here and we certainly o ought to have three rookies for every regular |
