Show HILLTOP TIMESHTIMES Women's Equality Day, Aug. 26 3 August 25, 2011 of IDEAs? President Woodrow Wilson and Congress that women's work during the war should be rewarded with recognition of their political equality. President Wilson changed his previous position and indicated he would support an amendment. In a speech on Sept. 18, 1918, he said: "We have made partners of the women in this war. Shall we admit them only to a partnership of suffering and sacrifice and toil and not to a partnership of right?" Seven months later, the House of Representatives, in a 304 to 90 vote, passed the proposed amendment to the U.S. Constitution. On June 4, 1919, the Senate also endorsed the amendment with a 56 to 25 vote. The amendment was then sent to the states; Illinois, Wisconsin and Michigan were the first to approve it. On Aug. 26, 1920, the Nineteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution became law, allowing women the opportunity to vote in elections, to include presidential elections. On Women's Equality Day, we recognize the hard work and dedication of those women's suffrage groups whose determination resulted in the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution in 1920. This movement was instrumental in ensuring American women secured a sacred and fundamental civil right: the right to have a voice and vote. BY VIVIAN G. CUMINS Equal Opportunity Specialist A t the request of Rep. Bella Abzug (D-N.Y.) in 1971, Congress designated the day of Aug. 26, as "Women's Equality Day." This date commemorates the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment, the Women's Suffrage Amendment, to the U.S. Constitution, which gave women full voting rights in 1920. Achieving this milestone was a culmination of a peaceful civil rights movement led by women that began in July 1848 at the Seneca Falls, New York Woman's Rights Convention. For years to follow, advocates for women's voting rights worked vigorously, leading public demonstrations, participating in suffrage marches and picketing the White House. Their persistence began to pay off when various states adopted women's suffrage legislation. In 1861, Kansas gave women the right to vote in local school elections; in 1869, Wyoming Territory granted women the right to vote and hold public office, and in 1870, Utah Territory gave full suffrage to women. A turning point for women's suffrage came after World War I. During World War I, women took jobs in factories to support the war; after the war, the National American Woman Suffrage Association made it a point to remind Buffalo Brewfest on Aug. 26 Most Insurance Plans Accepted.
