Show HILLTOP TIMES TIME S H 9 August 25, 2011 Play try-outs bring out imagination, dramatic qualities in children BY KRISTA STARKER Hilltop Times correspondent T hey tiptoed carefully across the smelly swamp then stalked through the tall grass where the secret treasure awaited. After typing in the secret code they received their treasure ... an imaginary cookie. This was one of several fun activities children practiced as they tried out for the play "The Tortoise versus the Hare," directed by the Missoula Children's Theater group. During try-outs the children also practiced marching, being expressive with their bodies, along with practicing their Brooklyn, Southern and British accents. Emma Young, who after try-outs was cast in a lead role as Coach Bowlback the Tortoise, said she enjoys participating in the plays and has also performed in another Missoula play in Hawaii. "It's really fun especially for kids who have nothing to do in the summer," said Young. The Missoula Children's Group consists of 50-60 two person teams who travel yearround to various cities around the U.S. bringing a specific play to put on with area children. "We are teaching life skills through the arts," said Kat Key, tour actor and director. In front of an audience composed SCHOOL FAIR NEWS BRIEFS Road closure Aug. 28 approved for line repair There is an approved road closure planned for Southgate Drive, north of 6th Street and south of 4th Street. The road outage will be Sunday, Aug. 28, from 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.. The purpose of the road closure is to repair a condensate line leak under Southgate Drive; the leak is near Building 215, on the curve in the middle of Southgate Drive. Road detour in Boyer Hill Military Housing Boyer Hill Military Housing announces a road detour on 6th Street on Sept. 1 and 2, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., for sewer line installation. Boyer Hill Military Housing will be detouring traffic on those days. Those vehicles heading west on 6th Street will have access to the Southwest Gate, but if travelling through, will be detoured around Charlestown Loop. Those vehicles heading east will be detoured around Charlestown Loop as well, and can access the Southwest Gate from there. Approximately 5,000 items were donated by the 748th Supply Chain Management Junior Leadership Council, Company Grade Officer Council and The Red Cross. The event also featured information on schools, evaluations, early intervention/education and after school programs. A water outage will occur Sept. 12 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. in order to connect water to the new End of Runway Shelter at the north end of Taxiway Alpha. Sale items may include paper products, soap and cleaning products, canned goods, sodas, water, laundry detergents, and a vareity of other products at a savings that average 30 percent or more. Customers must present a valid Department of Defense identification card that authorizes commissary privileges in order to shop. Cash, checks, debit cards and credit cards are accepted for payment. AWANA sign-ups at park housing fair The Hill AWANA program will be having a registration kick-off at Patriot Hills Park in Boyer Hill Military Housing area on Aug. 31 from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Patriot Hills Park on Yorktown Way will be the site of fun and games and a chance to learn about the program. The Hill AFB Chapel AWANA program is now on Sundays from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. beginning Sept. 11. Registration will also be taken Sept. 11 from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. AWANA is a Bible-based program that runs every week during the school year except during holidays. Each Sunday evening children will play games, learn memory verses, sing songs and listen to stories about the Bible. AWANA has open registration all year long and entry can be sought anytime of year.
