It was none other than Duane Sorensen of Western Unlimited in Spanish Fork, who started it in the mid-1990s. Shannon Smith and Kathleen Green were over NBHA UT03 in Spanish Fork and they wanted some new way to give away a saddle at a reasonable entry fee to the barrel racer. In the 90's you had to go to a huge national race or rodeo to attempt to win a saddle, and it just wasn't within the reach of the weekend barrel racer. Duane thought about it and came up with the idea. They charged $25 to enter the target for the saddle and that increased their normal 60-70 entries in a Saturday jackpot to 135 entries with 111 in the target portion. Everyone wanted to win that saddle! It was a huge success. After Smith and Green paid for the saddle, they were able to fund the rest of the prizes with the remaining entry fees. The event was such as success that it spread through Utah, into neighboring states and all over the country. Now years later, if you ask a barrel racer who started it, usually they aren't certain. Now in honor of Duane, for wonderful, serviceoriented man he was, and also to help people remember where the target barrel racing got its start, they have named the annual event after him. The first one was held Saturday, July 14, 2007, in the outdoor rodeo arena at Spanish Fork fairgrounds. Ty and TJ Tingey, present owners of Western Unlimited, jumped at the chance of being the main sponsor of the event. Some years back, Duane also initiated a scholarship fund for Utah high school rodeo seniors, which was presented at Utah State High School Rodeo Finals every June. This year, to help booster this fund, a silent auction was held along with the race on July 14, 2007. Duane's wife, Saundra, and daughters, Stephanie and Stacie, were pleased with the results of its introductory year, and are very thankful to those who supported this effort. "When Kathleen approached us about holding this barrel race in memory of Duane, we wanted proceeds of it to go to something he was passionate about, and since he was such a strong supporter of the High School Rodeo program and in pursuing a college education, we thought it was fitting to put the proceeds there," said Saundra. '"We were pleased with how professional Kathleen and Mindy ran the barrel race, and we were honored with everyone's generosity. It really made it a great event. Since the jackpot, we've had people approach us that missed this year's event that want to be a part of it next year with some really fun ideas. We are looking forward to it growing over time," Stephanie said. For their inaugural year, they had 77 entries in the first go and 80 in the second with $1,500 added money. They paid out slightly over $7,700 and gave away $4,000 in awesome awards. Saundra Sorensen-South won the target saddle donated by Western Unlimited. Second place in the target went to Leanza Curtis. Third place went to Cheri Bowden; fourth place won by Leanza Curtis, and finally fifth place went to Josh Ybarra. The Frontier Silver Trophy Buckle Fastest Time Award was won by Nadine Kern.
