Show -N E W S- Spanish Fork Covering what matters most WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 10, 2007 • B7 Find the story SFHS Orchestra As most of my readers know, I am a voracious reader who is willing to tackle almost anything, or at least give it a chance. Because of this, I've found myself reading and learning to enjoy fantasy, business books, selfhelp, politics, memoir, humor, educational text and ,many other books that most people probably, wouldn't pick up for pleasure reading. What I've discovered is that the concept of story can be found in many places. Everyone has a story. If you don't believe me, then watch those Friday features that CBS News lets readers vote on. To tell a good story, authors use those same questions you were probably taught in high school English: who, what, where, when, why and how. Journalists must know how to find a story. Whether it's a big news event or a local feature, the story is what draws an audience and keeps them reading or listening. Authors depend on story to garner readers. Public speakers use story to engage their audience. Business executives rely on story to sell their products. If you think about it, you will find story everywhere. for many reasons: 1. I'm not a Mormon, 2. I'm not a businessman or woman, or 3. Leadership and success don't sound like interesting topics to me, but in all three cases, you'd be wrong. Investigative journalist Jeff Benedict, a Mormon himself, examines the lives of seven Mormon business executives, focusing on how their core values, learned through their membership and participation in their church, influences the way they do business. Dell Computers, Deloitte & Touche USA, Black & Decker, JetBlue Airways all have Mormon CEOs. American Express has a Mormon CFO, and Harvard Business School's former dean (who now heads BYUIdaho), and the former CEO of Madison Square Garden. Benedict's easy-going style draws readers into thelives of these men, pointing out how. their integrity, service, and obedience to the tenants of a Mormon lifestyle have not only helped them succeed, but how it has improved the world for us all because of their products. I found the later chapters on how these men and their companies were effected by 9/11 to be especially interesting and worth reading, even if you don't care to read the entire book. The story is often the part we best remember. The Mormon Way of Doing Business: Leadership and Success Through Faith and Family by Jeff Benedict (Business Plus, 2007) You might think you don't want to read this book Lu Ann Brobst Staheli is a Christa McAullijfe Fellow, 2005 Nebo Reading Teacher of the Year, and former Utah English Language Arts Teacher of the Year.
