Chemistry students find the scientific side of gum Alexis Wright SFHS JOURNALISM Chewing gum for a chemistry assignment! What is this world coming to? It is one way that Tracy Poulsen, the AP Chemistry teacher at Spanish Fork High School, is starting to spark students' interests in chemistry, a task with which many teachers struggle. A recent experiment that brought chemistry to life was an exercise designed to find the percent of composition of sugar in bubble gum. At the beginning of class, the students were placed in groups of five and each was given a piece of bubble-gum. Each group weighed the five pieces of gum, took the gum out of the wrapper, weighed the wrapper so they could find the weight of the gum. The students chewed the gum for 20 minutes, then weighed the five pieces of gum in their wrappers. By dividing the weight of the gum after it was chewed by the weight of the gum before it was chewed and multiplying it by one hundred, the students were able to find the percent of the gum that was made from sugar. The results showed that 70 percent of the gum was actually sugar. Interesting experiments like this one help the students to want to do the work instead of only doing it for the grade. It was a great success with a ton of support from the students and parents Students along with many of their parents walked laps as a way to exercise and raise money to support their school. Prizes, dinner and treats were available throughout the night.
