Show Manti Legislator Unduly Censored Some one in Ephriam either editor edi-tor Cox of the Enterprise or Representative Repre-sentative D. h Beal has become slightly twisted relative to the status of the Gunnison-Levan state highway. In last week's issue the Enterprise had the following comment on the return of Representative Beal and a "kindly" roast for Representative P. P. Dyreng: "David N. Beal, one of Sanpete's two representatives in the State legislature leg-islature returned on March the 13th, after being at the capitol for two months. He reports having very much enjoyed his work while away. .He strongly opposed the bill introduced intro-duced by Representative Dyreng, making the Nephi-Levan-Gu'nnison road a state highway. He reports that Mr. Dyreng, in defending bis bill, claimed that unless the road in question were taken over by the state jt would cause the closing down of the Gunnison sugar factory a new reason why our (neighbors ton 'the south wish to rob us of tourist travel. tra-vel. Mr. Beal says that it will be to our advantage to see that no more roads in the county are declared state highways as each new road tak ten over by the state will only detract from the revenue for the up-keep of our present main roads." Where do you get that idea that Mr. Dyreng introduced the bill that would reinstate the Gunnison-Levan road as a state high-way? And why land on one of the best men that ever represented Sanpete County in a state legislature? For the benefit of the representative from the north end of the county and .others who may be misled by the Enterprise article, let it be known that Joseph Hickman of Bicknell, introduced in-troduced the first bill, known as H. B. No. 144. This bill was passed by the lower house and then was taken to the Senate. It was there that it was amended and for want of action it died. Joseph T. Finlanson of of Leamington, realizing the needs of the road introduced another bill, known as senate bill 141. This measure mea-sure was passed in the senate unanimously. unan-imously. It went to the house and the only opposition vote cast was ,that of Representative Beal of Ephriam. Eph-riam. Using good judgment and not showing selfish motives and believing believ-ing that the citizens in Gunnison valley val-ley and all the territory south were entitled to consideration. Renresenta- tive Dyreng voted for and supported the reinstatement of the highway. Why not "hop" on to Beal, he is the only ):ne in fthe entire -legislatui-e that- opposed improvement 'in Sanpete San-pete county. If the mew highway as designated in the bill is to work hardships on Ephriam, it is not known to ' the members of the legislature. leg-islature. If you folks have gasoline to sell, if you want tourists to travel through your town, no one in Gunnison Gun-nison Valley or the entire south end will offer any objections but will aid in sending all the tourists they f?i Bet in the name of common decency de-cency do not "roast" any individual who is trying to bring more travel through Sanpete county and upbuild Southern Utah. |
