She trained as a nurse in Chicago, Illinois, intending to travel the world with her nursing degree. Instead married a doctor, had four children, and two careers, nursing and journalism. In 1992, after the death of her husband, she retired and served as a VISTA volunteer nurse on the White Mesa Ute Reservation. SanJuAn has become her adopted home. She will be leaving this summer to serve another stint as a volunteer in Alaska. Robert S. McPherson was raised in Massachusetts, received a BA in English from Norwich University (1969) then spent four years as an officer in the United States Army. Following active duty, he and his wife, Betsy, moved to Utah where he completed an M.A. in the Humanities (1976) and a Ph.D. in History ( 1987) at Brigham Young University. He moved to San Juan County, Utah, in 1976 and bee came tiie first faculty member of the College of Eastern Utah San Juan Campus, where he teaches today. Dr. McPherson has served several years on the advisory Board of Editors for the Utah Historical Quarterly. He has traveled throughout the state full-tim- - for the Utah Humanities Councils Speakers Bureau and has encouraged the collection and writing of local history in Blue Mountain Shadows. Some of his most recent publications are Sacred Land Sacred View, The Journey of Navajo Oshley, and River Flowing From the Sunrise. Aldean Ketchum, of the Allen Canyon Ute Tribe in White Mesa, Utah, is the third generation in his family to learn how to carve and play the flute. He has been making his flutes and performing his music for over eleven years. In 1994, Aldean began traveling to schools performing with the Utah Opera Company. Flute making provides a spiritual and educational component for teaching elementary .students and young adults. Aldean wants to teach OtrSITGail the younger generation the tradition of the flute to keep the tradition alive. The flute represents harmony to help keep people in balance.
