January 24, 2001 - Page 11 Buck wrestlers second at toumey by Anna Thayn second A place trophy and a dominant home win were enjoyed by the Buckaroo Wrestling squad during the past week as they near the end of the regular season. Only six points separated Monticello from Manti for the top spot at the nine team Moab Tournament. Andy Butler, Kyle Curtis, and Kevin Krist led the way for the Bucks, each taking top honors in their weight class. Butler pinned two opponents and won by 15 point technical fall in another match. He is undefeated at 39-- 0 and has tied the MHS record for falls in a season. Curtis pinned his man in each early round and won 1 in a tough finals match. Krist won each match by large margins, with another technical fall to add to his yearly total. It is believed that Krist has now overtaken the MHS record for technical falls in a season. Krist also seems to be nearing the school record for take downs in a season. Second place honors were won by Casen Eldredge, and Mark Snyder. Each had big wins during the day and very close matches in the finals. Eldredge lost after a great match to the Colorado state ranked Kyle Riddell of Dove ' Creek, Snyder lost in overtime to a very tough competitor from 5-- 7-- 4. Mancos. Every rebound is a fight when the Monti cello Buc karoos and San Juan Broncos meet on the basketball court, as they did in the past week. This time, the Bucks earned a 44-4- 0 win. Ttavis Butler also earned a third place finish. Curtis Burtenshaw, TC Garcia and Jeff Blankenagel each finished with fourth place medals. Burtenshaw had a tough 5-- 3 A pin in the consolation round gave him a stay alive. spot in the finals, but he couldnt overcome his opponent in the 1 loss. 7-- Blankenagel fought back from a first round loss with two wins, but fell in the finals. Other Bucks at the tourney were Chad Butler, Skyler Dyer, Luke Martinez, Rye Randall, Robert Butler, Jayme Hatathley and Matt Keyes. Earlier in the week, the Buckaroos hosted Grand High in their final home match of the year. The Bucks dominated the Red Devils 46-2The JV action started the night right, with wins by Robert Butler, Rye Randall, and Jeremy Redd. In a match that brought the crowd to their feet, senior Jayme Hatathley took his man down, put him on his back, and won by fall. 8. In varsity action, Kevin Krist had a highlight of his own, winning by technical fall 16-- 1 in less than two minutes of action. Krist put points up hard and fast and with 9 seconds on the clock, got the final three points he needed to finish the match. Andy Butler won by technical fall, followed by pins for Chad Butler, Kyle Curtis, and TC Garcia. Curtis Burtenshaw won in overtime and Luke Martinez won 9-- 2. Skyler Dyer and Jeff Blankenagel worked hard but couldnt get the win. Mark Snyder and Casen Eldredge won by forfeit. loss in the first round but came back with two hard fought wins to make the final round. In a heartbreaker, Burtenshaw lost in overtime. Snyder wrestled to a second place finish at the Moab tournament, losing in the finals in a overtime match to a good opponent from Colorado. In other matches, Snyder dominated, winning 13-- 0 and by second round fall. Snyder is having an excellent season, losing only four matches this year.
