Show 20 The Salt Lake Tribune Thursday February 19 1987 Television Today KALL’s Rungc to Move Over to KLUB Mike Runge who has been as much of a fixture at KALL radio as Tom Barberi this past decade and a half is leaving the station In what he d scribes as a career opportunity he couldn’t refuse Runge accepted an offer to become operation and program director and on-apersonality at KLUB radio He joins the KLUB staff March 5 and will be the station’s morning talent from 530 to 10 am daily beginning the following Monday (March 9) according to Randy Rogers formerly of KLCY and KKAT who took over general manager chores at just 10 days ago (The changing of the guard at KLUB began in January when the station’s top deejay Woody P Snow decided to return to more familiar climes Eric Stenberg then general manager also is gone) Rogers explained that KLUB’s owners (Paul Palmer vice president of KFMB San Diego and Ballard Smith owner of the San Diego Padres) recognized the need to “localize" the radio entertainment aspect of the KLUB format Runge has the reputation of being a confirmed "workaholic'” and it has been suggested he can’t resist an unattended microphone If KLUB ownership was on the lookout for a known commodity in the community Runge fits the bill Among other things he is the stadium voice for the University of Utah football team and is the game announcer for the Salt Lake Golden Eagles He is for iJ Jf J ir Television Editor his work on behalf of the prevention of blindness He joined KALL in 1973 as its Skywatch traffic reporter and in the succeeding 14 years did virtually every other job in the place including sales promotion procuction and chores (including the Skywatch traffic report flights) and was program director when the KLUB offer came around (For all I know he made the morning coffee too It’s a sure bet I’ve overlooked something that Mike has done but he’ll understand) The loss to KALL may not be felt immediately but it will be felt and it will be considerable He and the station part amicably but for those of us d who awake each morning to the banter between Runge and Barberi going cold turkey two weeks from now may be terminally traumatic Especially when Runge goes on the air with KLUB’s adult contemo porary music format opposite his KLUB-KISN-F- well-know- n Harold Schindler Li -- on-a- ir good-nature- pai-san- at KALL When Barberi waxes eloquent regarding “the bozos in the Legislature” Runge has been his straight man It won’t be the same without them trading ever-prese- one-line- Today’s Viewing Television Stations I ' KUTV Channel 2 973-300- 0 KTVX Channel 4 KSL-TChannel 5 575-555- 5 KIED Channel 7 KSTL-TV2- 0 KBYl' Channel 11 (Provo) 378-529- 8 292-2253 Cable TV Channel One 322-031- 7 KOOC Channel 30 (Ogden) 621-303- 0 972-- 1 581-777- V I - Thursday February 19 !
