Information uhm Tribune Sports Writer Few things went right for the Jazz Wednesday night against Milwaukee They committed 26 turnovers They made only four of their final 10 free throws They couldn’t figure out how to stop the Bucks who shot 51 percent or Terry Cummings who scored 35 points And — get this — Thurl Bailey got a technical foul for something Karl Malone said The final score: Milwaukee 113 Utah 109 The reaction: A little Jazz frustration Briefly the significance of the game revolved around the Bucks’ sixth straight win and their climb to within one game of Detroit in the Central Division The Jazz meanwhile dropped to 1 and failed to get closer than Dallas in the two games to first-plac- e Midwest Afterward though the normally quiet Jazz were grumbling a little about the officiating of Blaine Reichelt with 1:16 remainFirst there was a ll 4 ing and the Jazz trailing Bailey got the ball inside and spun around for a layup 6 that would have made it His shot missed however as Bailey crashed to the floor The Bucks quickly boost4 on a ed their lead to jumper by Craig Hodges “I got fouled that's for sure” said Bailey “At least that’s my opinion The trouble is my opinion doesn’t count It only counts if you’re one of the guys in the striped shirts” lead As it turned out the Bucks' turned out to be just enough of a cushion because a three-pointby Darrell Griffith with 9 14 seconds left got the Jazz within three Then after a Bucks’ time-ou- t Griffith slapped away the inbounds pass and John Stockton fed Dell Curry With eight seconds to go the Jazz had a chance for overtime But Curry missed and Cummings iced the game with a free throw with four seconds to play Bailey was also involved in a bizarre play with 3:43 left in the third quarter At the time 8 Paul unstoppable lately came out and more than matched Malone at the other end of the floor scoring 35 points to 9 lead the Milwaukee Bucks to their victory over the Jazz In the Jazz's previous five games Malone had put up some big offensive numbers (254 points and 11 rebounds a game and 55 percent shooting) while the starting power forward for the opposition wasn’t doing much at the other end to counter him (106 points and 68 rebounds and 44 percent shooting) In other words the power forward spot had been a total mismatch for the Jazz the last couple of weeks But not on this night While Malone played well and finished with 26 points and eight rebounds Cummings loomed larger drilling 16 of 25 shots and contributing eight rebounds and four steals “It was one of those games where he was making them and we were going to him” 103 Top 20 Basketball 30-2- By Lex Hemphill 1 “Sports Capsulen 1 "I got no comments” fumed Malone after the game But then he blasted Reichelt “Hey anytime a guy Don Nelson who noted that Cummings broke out of a three-gam- e slump “He hit ’em outside inside and he ran the court well That was the key to his game” Cummings knew from reading the box scores that Malone was on a roll lately and that it was his matchup “We felt coming into the game that he was the big difference in their winning” said Cummings “He’s a tough player He’s quick and he's strong When you play a Karl Malone you want to keep your body on him” Actually Cummings didn’t have to worry about keeping his body on Malone all night because the power forward matchup wasn’t consistent throughout the game When Malone rambled for 18 first-hal- f points (to 17 for Cummings) Nelson countered by switchcenter Jack Sikma onto Malone ing Mark Eaton a while Cummings took lesser offensive several weeks this year in team rebounding” night in Utah’s final home game of the season” Utah at Air Force - At Academy Fieldhouse 7:35 If Springs plays he’ll be stationed on Air Force’s freshman condition may well determine the outcome of a game which Utah needs to win to assure itself at least a 500 record in regular season WAC play "Albert hurt his back in the BYU game and 0 is about a possibility to play at Air Force” revealed Archibald “He says he’s fine but the doctors disagree We’ll not take any chances He may need another day of rest We’ll need him for Notre Dame Saturday free-thro- w 50-5- shots” Archibald noted that Air Force has been beaten at home in close decisions against Wyoming and Colorado State “New Mexico had a big second half to beat them and of course BYU lost at the Academy so we know what’s in store for us” Utah taking a 15-- 9 overall log and 6 WAC mark into the game received strong inside play from Springs (13 points and 8 rebounds) and sophomore Mitch Smith (16 points and 6 rebounds) in the first game Smith went 7 for 9 from the field and on the defensive end turned in four blocks “We do match up with them well inside and that’s where we’ll be going with the ball" Archibald said “One thing which might be a surprise to the Falcons is the improved play of Jimmy Madison If Mitch Albert and Jimmy are one I feel we’ll be successful” 7-- Ute Basketball Season Once Again Down to 10 Days in February - AIR FORCE ACADEMY Colo So who’s surprised this University of Utah basketball season has come down to 10 days in February? Any Crimson worth his or her block U sweater is cognizant of the success scenario of the previous two Februarys — Manny Hendrix and Co dipping deep into a pocketful of miracles to transform despair to delirium “February has been our month Maybe this is another one” observed Ute Coach Lynn Archibald after Utah had disposed of New Mexico 5 Feb 7 in the Special Events Center Another one indeed Counting the 1 record thus far in February the Utes have gone 16-- 3 during Valentine's month over the past three seasons All of which begs the question: Where were the Utes in December and January? In the tank would be a fair assessment Last year the Utes emerged from January with defeats to Wyoming BYU and Notre Dame by an average of 21 points Utah's Inglorious January this year was cloked out with a 8 giveaway at Colorado 5 State and a thrashing at 77-6- 2-- 59-5- rock-botto- m 72-5- Wyoming Since it isn’t the pros where they play for pay down the stretch just what is a plausible explanation for Utah’s late-seaso- n pyrotechnics? "I think it boils down to the maturity factor” Archibald mused Wednesday "For instance last year we matured right down the lineup — Kelvin Upshaw adjusted to the point most of guard spot after being the the year and Jerfy Stroman began shooting with much more confidence” Archibald’s 1986 maturity theory was reflected in eight straight victories (Feb 6 through March 1) which shot the Utes into a tie for the Western Athletic Conference title and a subsequent NCAA berth This year? “Chris Fulton was a redshirt transfer last year and Jimmy Madison played sparingly As starters they are maturing quickly Both had excellent outings the last two games And Gale Gondrezick has developed into a clutch player You may remember Gale lost a lot of his confidence a year ago He has come full circle to be a complete team player” Archibald not given to eccentric Hunting and a pragmatist whose guiding precept is posted on an SEC conference room wall — “It's amazing how much can be accomplished off-gua- when no one cares who gets the credit” — flat out believes he has an intelligent basketball team “Now I’m not talking about a grade point average I’m referring to how we were disciplined and stayed under control against BYU 8 last Saturday at Provo in Utah’s upset win If you have discipline you have control and control will get you confidence and consistency” Archibald confessed that his team’s intelligence factor helped him retain a reasonable sense of sanity after the twin debacles at CSU and Wyoming two weeks ago "I know it’s not very intelligent to free throws but that’s what cost us three WAC games I knew we’d eventually make free 65-5- iss throws” It’s just ironic that Utah’s intelligence seems to surface each February Is it tournament tunnel vision? “That’s part of it They want to extend their season” Archibald reasoned “Beating BYU seemed to really pump them the team up They beat a preseason conference favorite — on their floor They did it by coming from behind in the late going They played smart" The past couple of years Utah survived more on luck than the wisdom they exhibited Saturday at Provo and in the 5 win over New Mexico Feb 7 "We haven't been what you’d call lucky all year" Archibald said "I mean like a Manny Hendrix prayer shot at the buzzer or a Manny drive which beat Air Force 3 he e last February “And we screwed up by losing at home" Archibald said "We won every WAC home game last year You don't lose at home and win the conference” So where’s this “intelligent” Ute team 77-6- coast-to-coa- st 64-6- going? c Air Force Thurs- Nowhere if it doesn't beat day night More than a seeding in the WAC meet is riding on the next 10 days “We feel two more wins could get us in the NIT if we fail to make the NCAA” Archibald said “BYU made it in the NIT last year with 16 wins Hey a tournament is a tournament The NCAA is the ‘granddaddy’ of them all but in gaining maturity for next year the NIT would be all right” The bottom line is Utah wouldn’t deserve even an NIT consideration if the club can’t beat Air Force Thursday night The emotional bubble formed with the conquest of BYU would be punctured and the Utes would be in jeopardy of getting the bejabbers kicked out of them Saturday by Notre Dame Would the Utes be tournament fodder (of 3 or any flavor) at say "I’ll tell you more after Albuquerque the WAC meet Last year proved we were capable the Utes were the 64th team selected for the NCAA meet even after losing in the first round of the WAC tourney and played rugged North Carolina a respectable game for 34 16-1- 17-1- minutes” “I think it’s reasonable to think the WAC could get three teams in the NCAAs this year We’re still shooting for one of them It would be a real shame if we weren’t in our own place for the NCAA” Archibald said ? |
