About midnight, when about three miles went of Greenwich, there ame a rush of stifling tmnke from the hold and every electric light was extinguished. Captain McAlister sent in the alarm for Are drill, and the men came tumbling out of their bunks. In the meantime the steering gear had been blocked and the pitot a finding them selves unable to direct tlie course of the steamer, hurried to the assistance of the others ia saving Uvea. Captain McAlister ordered Tilot to go to the hurricane deck and Vuosen one of the boats, while he went to tbe main deck, and tried to loosen the two large life hosts. Captain McAlister managed to loosen tlie port life host. The other(boat was frozen to the decks, but a smaller one was mam ready to be lowered away. While the officers and crew were working there was a scene of confusion among the ten passengers. They ran about the saloons in disarray. Tlie been woman who lost her life had erouxed by the stewsnlese and waa on her way to one of the boats, when the suddenly turned and dashed back into the flaming cabin.
