Show HAM THE CHIEF COXSPIKATOR KRVKAf.KD HIMSKI.K Report my- and il comes lium so many quarters as co force belief that (he chief conspirator aainst the rights anrl liberties of I lie people of ltah .--lands self-revealed and self-proclaimed. The public will scarcely believe be-lieve who this lowering genius is, tha: furnishes the brain-power fur the numerous nu-merous deep and complex plots which aim at the liberties of the people of this Territory. Hon. C M. Hawley. As.-ociate .Justice .Jus-tice of the Supreme Court of Utah, Judge of the Second J udicial District, Deputy Post master, hotel-button-holer, kc, &c, &c, is reported to be the man. Who would have thought it ? Pieport says that he claims to dictate Chief Justice McKean, and there is little doubt that he would try to do so, whether there was any prospect of success suc-cess or not ; that he manipulates Governor Gov-ernor Shaffer, which is very probable, as his Excellency is still sick, we believe be-lieve ; that he announces himself as the secret power which moves the "ring" and directs its motions; and that he takes particular credit for leading lead-ing the clique that is so bitterly opposed op-posed to the people here, and so strenuously stren-uously determined to make trouble if thev can- Who is this Judge, Associate justice jus-tice and Deputy Postmaster ? What are the antecedents of the man who plants himself so in the front to crush the "immorality" of Utah, and bring the crusade against her ' people to a successful termination. His abilities have not b:en very conspicuously con-spicuously manifested in any public manner, that we have heard of. He has never dazzled the bar with the lu-minousness lu-minousness of his legal light. He has been a frequent attendant at hotels, filling the minds of visitors to this city with tales about the "horrible Mormons," Mor-mons," if reliable men with their ears open are to be credited. Is this a eourse to maintain the dignity of his judicial position, sustain the impartial character of an upright judge, and preserve pre-serve uusullied the ermine? If the implication im-plication is wrong we will take pleasure pleas-ure in giving Judge Hawley space in our columns to correct it. And as he has set himself up as a censor of public pub-lic morals we invite him to answer these questions: Whether he has a family in the East of which the mother is still living there? Whether he did not sejk 1'or and obtain a divorce from that wife under circumstances of the most questionable ques-tionable character? Whether it is not held by sound lawyers that that divorce "would not hold water?" And whether whe-ther if that wife were so disposed she could not yet place him in the painful position of defendant in a trial for bigamy? big-amy? As the seeking for information is always considered justigable, we hope Judge Hawley will not view these questions in any other light than that of giving him an opportunity to defend his claims to be the highly moral individual he wishes to appear. We have no desire to attack men's private character; but this man makes great pretensions to high morality, which are not well received by a public among whom such reports are current, having been brought here from the far East. As for the reputed claims that he dictates Judge McKean, we leave that to the Chief Justice to consider. Whether he manipulates the Governor or not is a small matter. Moat likely he does from the manner in which his Excellency has "put his foot in it" But if so, it is an outrageous proceeding proceed-ing to exercise such baneM influence on a man whose mental faculties are undoubtedly yielding under his physical phy-sical suffering. |
