Show 2 BOX Brigham City, Utah Sunday, August 1, 1976 ELDER letters to the lEditor.'.jW NEWS, I Marketing survey hopefully a catalyst We wonder if anything really new was made ing when Architects Planners Alliance aired a preliminary report on its Brigham City marketing and consumer attitude survey. As reported in a front page story today, the firm determined in its local investigation that residents do a great deal of their shopping out of public Wednesday even- town, principally in neighboring Ogden. Most buy groceries, drugs and other convenience items here. But a sharp dropoff was reported in the number of dollars spent locally for other goods and services, including sporting goods, mens and womens apparel and appliances. SHORTCOMINGS mentioned by consumers as they viewed the Brig- ham City business district were insufficient selection of goods, prices and inferior quality of merchandising. ve There were some positive factors mentioned, too, availability of store-sid- e parking, pleasant shopping environment and convenience, being mentioned. The survey report confirmed previous evaluations. This is not to say, of course, that every merchant is guilty of the general indictment brought. But the total image projected by the Brigham City central business community is pretty well defined. This serves to point up the need for Editor: The board of trustees of Brigham City Community hospital would like to express its appreciation for the enthusiasm, interest and support exhibited by the community in regard to the opening of the hospital. Nearly 3,000 people attended the open house and toured the hospitals facilities. We are especially appreciative of the Outstanding coverage given by the Box Elder News and Journal describing the hospitals facilities, activities, services and personnel. Our hospital looks forward to serving the people of this community. We are dedicated to creating an atmosphere of friendliness, hospitality and providing efficient, conscientious and professional care. businessmen and merchants to work cooperatively and unselfishly in a progressive effort aimed at strenthening those areas now considered weak. For a long time weve contemplated physical changes in the central business district, including landscaping, placing utility lines underground, improving parking and possibly creating covered walkways. But obviously this represents only part of what needs to be accomplished. Creating an inviting and convenient environment for shoppers also must include attention to merchandising as brought out in the APA analysis. off-stre- et Sincerely, Brigham City Community Hospital Board of Trustees Equal time and justice? Editor: CERTAINLY competition from modern shopping malls and other commercial district improvements in Logan and Ogden is only becoming greater. And will continue to do so, threatening to skim off even more Box Elder county shopping IN CASE WE HAVEN'T SAID IT LATELY When that happens not only is local business income decreased but tax revenue to the city loses ground. We are now awaiting with great eagerness recommendations based on the APA findings. Presentation of these is expected by the end of August. Hopefully, this latest report and the ensuing recommendations will serve as a catalyst to bring action on major business district improve- ments. Willard sets example with colorful cans have noticed the colorful and white blue litter cans which red, of Willard has located within the city its corporate limits along State Route 84. The recepticles have been placed on each side of the highway. A motorist neednt travel far before passing one. Were sure theyve proved to be a convenience to many of the traveling public. Willard rates a pat on the back for this effort which reflects community pride and which, to an extent, must reduce the amount of littering along d the highway. much-travele- Other Box Elder towns and cities would be well served to follow the example. Litter is a continual problem. There are those who will toss their wrappers and cans on the ground immediately next to a waste can, leemingly not to know better. Or to care. But still others need only the encouragement. of a recepitcle conveniently located to put their litter where it belongs. Walking down Brigham Citys north Main street recently, we picked up a soda pop can which sbmeone had cast onto a residential lawn. Our intention was to deposit it in the next litter can. Only we never found one. During Gov. Calvin L. Ramptons visit here this past week, the problem of sanitation and garbage disposal on private lands around reservoirs used for recreational purposes was raised. Theres a difference of opinion about whether state money should be used to clean up these grounds. Its a challenge and a definite problem to be resolved. But there should be no question about public property and the responsibility of the government with jurisdiction to keep it clean. The first line of defense, of course, should be education against littering. In every home. Having waste cans strategically placed around the Community, however, is also important. Not complete hi 5 until next spring? Theres more than convenience to be associated with completion of Interstate-1- 5 between Hot Springs and Brigham City. Opening of the segment should bring a reduction in the number of fatal traffic accidents in this south Box Elder county area. State Route 84 which currently handles all motor vehicle traffic between the two points is overloaded. It has become a death corridor in recent years. The figures say it. Thirteen fatal accidents resulting in the deaths of 15 persons have occured on the stretch during the past five years (1971-75according to figures of the Utah Department of Transportations division of safety. Five of those victims were claimed last year, three of them on icy or d roads in November. If Mr. Howe is convicted of breaking the law, then he should have his just reward the same as any other U.S. citizen. But for the Mormon, IDS, church sect to convict him before he has a chance to defend himself only proves that church and state should not intermingle. In this country a person is innocent until proven guilty. Maybe Mr. Howe should plead discrimination when he goes before the magnificent 12 on grounds of the IDS founder. Her question brought down the An open letter to Brigham City After a pleasant weekend, we returned home to find our home broken into and robbed! The vandalism that occurred was bad enough, but nothing compared to the things that were stolen! I feel the sorriest for my two children who lost all of their money. A summers worth.of work! We dont believe in allowance at our house, so they have both spent many long hours baby sitting, weeding gardens, and mowing lawns and anything else they could do, and saving their money for school this fall, to say nothing of the many late nights they spent digging worms and staying at home to sell them. All this effort was emptied out by whomever! The damage done to my sons coin collection was the most vicious vandalism ever. He has spent many hours and his own money on it. To break open all the proof set cases and leave the mesS thrown all over...well, the best I can say without swearing is I hope you are proud of your work! Because even if your conscience should convince you to return them, they are lost forever. But you left your fingerprints! The sorriest job I have to do now is convince my children that their hard work wasnt in vain, that its necessary, because they only believe what they saw and that even then someone will rip it off anyway. The next hardest job is to get the dried egg of my walls, carpet and furniture. If I had the culprits in hand now, theyd clean it off with their nose! To all parents of Brigham City: I hope if your child suddenly has a lot of silver coins, jewerly and cash, that it would be a good idea to check their pockets and rooms. Im sure that Id notice if my children suddenly had more change in their pockets and other unexplained items. I hope that who ever robbed my home, has a rotten time with their ill gotten gains and that you realize that you now have scars for life, and a record to beat. We have no doubt that youll be caught and properly punished. Our very special thanks to Sargeant DeRkye and Patrolman Lemmon for their prompt action and all their help. I found myself delighted to know not everyone is inconsiderate as I had started to believe. I had called a TV repairman a week prior to todays noon hand. Well, it is kind of a purddy plant. This scribe just recently returned from a weeks vacation. But is sad to report that he didnt get the house painted. Our family spent a few days at Bear Lake. It wasnt as much fun as it usta be. The kids are too old now to believe in the Bear Lake monster. They just rolled their eyes when I mentioned it. Kids 'are so insens tive. Vhen iney were younger, every April Fools day morning theyd put salt in the sugar bowl. And then wait for Dad to fix his Postum .
