Show PORTO RICO ' The following is an "extract from a letter just received from Miss Fanny Fan-ny Carlton, who Is at Bayamon Por- I to Rico, on a mission. It was written writ-ten election day: j "I wonder how the election came out in the States today. Of course I the people here do not vote for pres-; pres-; ident. All we have is our municipal munici-pal election, and the people have j been much more excited over this j little election than the people in the States over the presidential election, j "I do hope whoever gets elected president will put in a governor of this island, who will have a little , backbone. They say the government i is to suppress the use of tobacco, here, Just as it has the use of alcoholic alco-holic liquors, but that does not mean much, for liquor is very, very far '. from being suppressed, i "It has just made our blood boil to see the Socialists and Unionists carrying their flags up and down the streets with never a sign of an American Am-erican flag with them. Yet what can we do when the policemen walk right along beside them without making any pretense of enforcing the orders that the red flag shall be suppressed, j "The Unionists are those who- are , in favor of the independence of the ; island, but they certainly are far ! from being ready for independance." |
