Show 8B 28, 1988 Thursday, January THE GREEN SHEET SCHOOLS 'Knightly News' Presented By Students WEST VALLEY. Second grade students at Hunter elementary are getting into communications in a big way as they plan their own newscast, the Hunter Knightly News. Since the school mascot is the knight, students lelt the name appropriate and are working hard to find out just what goes into making a TV newscast said teacher Lynette Rich. The second grade curriculum includes the topic of community helpers in connection with which students have been studying TV reporters, she explained, along with communication and er education. consum- noted and their program will be videotaped for parents to see during February parent-teache- r conferences she concluded. Students taught by Mrs. Rich and by WylaGene Seal are combining their knowledge to produce their newscast. Children and parents will visit KSL TV on Jan. 25 and 28. There they will be able to see the A misspelled word on a letter of application for a job sticks out like a black eye. People with black eyes often explain those injuries with the excuse that "I ran into a door." Thats what job applicants may encounter when they misspell words in those letters of application a closed door. Blame it on Noah Webster. The arrival of dictionaries helped to standardize spelling. Before that, people often- paid little attention to spelling. Even famous authors such as William Shakespeare would spell creatively. Its said that he "misspelled" his name so many times it sparked heated arguments about whether he authored all the literature that equipment used and the actual procedure of putting together a newscast, and will also watch a live newscast, said Mrs. Rich. Students will be writing their own weather commercials, forecasts and news reports, she - ssssssss&sssssssssssr - Excaliburs Bring Home Drill Awards bears his name. The standardization of spelling crept into American schools, ana then came spelling bees. Utah teachers and students participate in a statewide spelling bee. Its hoped that this activity helps students to master at least the frequently misspelled words, as well as the more complicated ones. Some families with several children have spelling bees, and I Spelling is a skill almost entirely associated with writing. So instead of having the children spell orally, why not let them write the words? Another suggestion: If one. of the contestants misspells a word, why not urge that member of the family to find that word in the dictionary? Some educators say looking up a word can imprint the correct spelling in a persons mind for life. Why are my fingers crossed? Fm hoping this column doesnt have any misspelled words, thats why.
