The crash occurred just before the Federal Communications Commission in Washington, D.C., approved plans for a nationwide computerized train control system designed to prevent crashes caused by human error by automatically stopping speeding trains. THOMPSONTOWN, Pa. (UPIA Conrail freight train that apparently ignored a stop sign collided head-o- n with another train in rural central Pennsylvania Thursday, killing four crew workers and igniting a fire that engulfed five locomotives and several cars, officials said. Two more workers were injured when the trains traveling at up to 40 mph crashed at about 8 a.m., derailing 36 cars and spilling coal and other freight none of which was hazardous, Conrail officials said. One train was carrying coal from Southwest Pennsylvania to Baltimore and had 105 cars and two locomotives, Conrail spokesman Bob Libkind said. The second train, with 61 cars and three locomotives, was hauling truck trailers and container cargo from Elizabeth, N.J., to Chicago. A preliminary investigation showed the crash occurred when the eastbound train ignored a stop signal that was posted to allow the westbound train to pass first on the track, Libkind said. The head-o- n collision occurred just west of Thomson-tow- n, a community of about 700 people some 30 miles northwest of Harrisburg, officials said. Darvin Leach, whose farmhouse is near the tracks, said he heard the "boom" when the trains hit and arrived on the scene minutes later. Leach said'he spoke to one 'of the injured crew workers. "He was cut all over the face and hands. He was pretty well upset," the farmer said. All five locomotives were destroyed and caught fire, which spread to other cars and still smoldered late Thursday afternoon, federal officials said. Two crew members were dead on arrival at a hospital in Lewistown, officials said. The bodies of two other workers who initially were unaccounted for were identified in the wreckage, Conrail officials said. The two injured crew workers were taken to the same hospital, and a hospital spokesman said they were treated for minor injuries, including bruises and cuts, and listed in fair condition. In a letter dated Jan. 7 and released by the White House Thursday with Reagan's acceptance, Judge Bork said, "I wish to speak, write and teach about law and other issues of public policy more extensively and more freely than is possible in my present position" as a member of the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia. Bork, who had insisted the Senate vote on his nomination rather than quit when the tally was obviously against him, said his decision to leave the federal bench was difficult "because of what I owe you, to the many Americans who have written to me in the last six months to express their support and, indeed, to all Americans our system of justice serves." In a "Dear Bob" letter, Reagan said he was accepting the resignation effective Feb. 5, with "deep sadness." "The unprecedented political attack upon you which resulted in the regrettable Senate action was a tragedy for our country," Reagan wrote. "All Americans are the poorer today for not having your extraordinary talents and legal skills on the high court." in October against confirming 2 The Senate voted WASHINGTON, D.C. As a consequence of Bork's defeat, and the later withdrawal of nominee Douglas Ginsburg, the high court has been operating with just eight justices this term. ' ITT OT OKI A committee differ on Iranscam 'concern' Bush, WASHINGTON, D.C. (UPI) Vice President George Bush said he expressed "concerns" to other administration colleagues about the U.S. arms sales to Iran although the congressional report on the affair says no one remembers what he said. Thursday, the Washington Post published Bush's answers to questions posed Tuesday by columnist Mary McGrory, who asked Bush to expand on the reservations he says he harbored about the dealings. The vice president has said he was worried about having Israel involved, and in his answers to the columnist he said, "I also had concerns that I have when any covert action is undertaken how will it be interpreted if the cover is blown? Will lives be lost? Will our credibility be damaged? Bush, running for the Republican presidential nomination, has been embroiled recently in questions about his role in the scandal. His answers are the first indication Bush has given that he had worries about the operation that went beyond Israel's involvement. Israel brokered the first sale of U.S. arms to Iran in November 1985. Bush again said, "I do not discuss what I tell the president." However, again for the first time, the vice president said unspecified "others" in the administration know of his concerns. However, the Nov. 18 congressional report on the scandal says at least twice that no one questioned by the two select committees can remember what Bush said about the operation. "The vice president attended several meetings on the Iran initiative, but none of the participants could recall his views," the report says in its opening summary. Bush said in his answers, "Records indicate I probably attended an ad hoc meeting on Jan. 7, 1986, which was not an NSC meeting but I do not recall any strenuous objections. Had there been any strenuous objections, I am sure I would have remembered it." But at that meeting which records indicated was a full NSC meeting Secretary of State George Shultz and Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger strongly argued against the arms sales. .
