Show Friday, January 1 J, 1988 ChflONiclt End sexist accusations Editor: Shauna Bona and many of her "foaming feminist" friends need to Consider a piece of "excess baggage" not mentioned in her column on Jan. 1 1: the enormous chips they seem to have on their shoulders. Her observations about marriage remind me of Eddie Murphy telling how he "went to Texas, looking for racism." Many feminists are so busy "looking for sexism," that anything anyone says or does including men have had to resort to to avoid being verbal tippy-toeiconsidered sexists is likely to carry at least some sexist connotation; Forgive me for quoting from such a sexist literary work as the Bible, but "Seek and ye shall find." Now even marriage is a "plot," created by men to oppress women. I agree humanism is something that needs to be strived for in our society, but it works both ways. I have grown weary of the sexist accusations constantly being made about me and all other bepenised members of the human race. I have sat in class on this campus and listened to women say, "Sexism is wrong," and, "Men are oppressist bastards," all in the same breath. This suspicion of all males is wrong. Believe it or not, my male friends and I have never sat around discussing ways to oppress females. We have, on the other hand, discussed the difficulties of trying to get along with women who hold these suspicious attitudes toward men. At times, I am tempted to climb to the top of the mountain and yell to the world that I have never done anything to oppress anyone, and am tired of being held responsible for what my forefathers did to my foremothers. Concerning Bona's attitude toward marriage, autonomy does not mean selfishness. One can be autonomous, and still ng have commitments in life. Bona certainly seems to be committed to her work at the Chronicle. Are we to assume she is willing to make an exception to her "autonomy" for a job, but not for another human being? When anyone's need for independence comes at the cost of human relationships, that person should take a good look at his or her values. Furthermore, the suggestion that our move toward humanism entails the extinction of marriage, family and home, is frightening. Are we to believe that a society without these institutions is a better one? Joe Jackson wrote a song about racism, sexism and stereotyping in which he states, "Kill all the blacksKill all the reds And if there's war between the sexesThen there'll be no people left." This is a world of people, and like it or not, we do need each other. What we are seeking is justice and equality for all, not a battle of Us. vs. Them. I think all of what that means. us, male and female, need to We must all do our part as individuals and as a society in attaining the goal of humanism, but can't we do it without the bitterness and suspicion? ate David Schindler Junior French Elway overrated player Editor: The strike, the scab games and now John Elway receiving the NFL'S MVP award. Next thing you know, Geraldo Rivera will be commentating on Monday Night Football. I couldn't agree more with Kent Condon that Elway is overrated and is just a "good quarterback." It's a shame when two more deserving and gifted athletes like Jerry Rice and Joe Montana get passed up for MVP honors in favor of a mediocre talent like Elway. There are at least five quarterbacks in the AFC alone that are better than Elway. His number seven ranking can attest to this fact. I believe Elway was selected because of two important factors. First, the media and the NFL have been waiting patiently for Elway to reach a level of decency. After all, he was the most sought-afte- r player in college football history and greatness was certainly assured. KOFI AMISSAH DATE: JANUARY 1 6, 1 988 OF ALBANY, NEW YORK (SATURDAY) TIME: Fred Falcon Communication and political science Hart's motives genuine Editor: Your editorial condemning Gary. Hart (Jan. 4) was off target in my opinion. Your account insinuated that his and that his return to the campaign is very funds this year is motivation to receive matching campaign to pay off debts from his '84 bid. This opinion is very different from what I have gathered from other sources. From what I have read concerning this issue, I believe there is no way Hart could even consider paying off his past debt with the new funds, due to the obvious fact that he wouldn't be able to. This fact was established long ago. He knew this when he announced his return to the race. I believe this move is very bold, difficult, risky and, above all, signals a commitment to his goals. It is not a calculated plan to use taxpayers' money to get him off the hook. self-servi- ng Editor: In response to Kari Andreasen's letter to the Chronicle (Jan. 4), I would like to reassure her that the incidents she witnessed involving "Greek" students at a recent basketball game are not accepted or tolerated by the administration of the University of Utah or the "Greek" Council. Many years ago, the U. developed a "Greek" Judiciary composed of students, faculty and community members to hear complaints such as Andreasen's. "Greek" Judiciary can take action against a specific fraternity or has the option of referring the individuals involved to the Student Behavior Committee. In the past, chapters have been placed on social probation, fines have been levied, and service work hours have been assigned. As Chief Justice of the Judiciary, I welcome the opportunity to speak with Andreasen regarding her complaint. If the concerns she expressed in the letter to the Chronicle are sincere, she has an opportunity to take action in much more appropriate forum she may file a formal complaint against the chapter and the members involved to insure that such actions by "frat boys" do not go unpunished. I look forward to hearing from her. I can be reached at the Student Involvelment Center Union 270. a Brad Gunnell Senio r MVP: great oeao no one but Elway Editor: I would like to know, has Kent Condon ever seen a Denver Broncos game this season? I am sure that he has, but you couldn't tell by his column on John Elway (Jan. 13). According to: Condon's article, Elway is a good player, but not worthy of the MVP title. In writing his argument, Mr. Condon failed to give proper evidence, and was very biased and judgmental in his opinion. So if I may elaborate, I'll fill in trie gaps. John Elway was voted MVP not only by UPI and the Associated Press, but by the Players Association as well. Opposing teammates seem to think Elway is worthy of this title. Fellow players believe Elway has done more for his team and he always comes through when the situation needs him most (at least almost always). The Broncos also play in the AFC West, one of the toughest divisions in the NFL. As for Marino, he's probably in the easiest division in football: the AFC East. And Bernie Kosar plays in the AFC Central, which isn't much better. Speaking of Bernie Kosar, yes he is a good quarterback, but he has good running backs to help him. Kevin Mack and Ernest Byner happen to be one of the only duos ever to rush over 1,000 yeards in the same season. What backs does Elway have to help him? Winder, Willhite and "Lang aren't much when it comes to racking up yards. Even Dan Marino has outstanding receivers to help him, such as Duper and Clayton; whereas Elway has good receivers, but realistically they're not as good as others playing in the NFL today. Just a few more stats to support my argument: Elway is the leading rusher in quarterbacks and can escape the blitz easier than most. On the Broncos, he is the third leading rusher for the last two years. He has the strongest arm and can throw Mite Info 0) economicsEnglis h HEME'S A Rand Moorehead J . 1 888 Right now.
