When the home was purchased by the copper company it served for a time as company offices, and was later rented out to multiple tenants before it became a victim of the growing tailings pond. The Drury's and Brigham Inkleys were English and Hannah Inkley was Norweigan. Both families played a prominent part in the history of the community, because the Drury home, which was built in the mouth of a canyon draw was moved down into what later became Garfield proper and remodeled to become the first library on the west side of the valley. The Inkleys contribution was the fact that Hannah Inkley became a midwife and ushered many of the area s children into the world. Mar-thm- KEARNS. It is very exciting to be opening a new school and a great opportunity for myself, the students, staff and community, said Dr. Annette Duzette who will serve as principal of the new Jefferson junior high school. Designed to house 1,440 students, the school expects about 1,000 this year, she noted, offering room for growth. Similar in design to Hunter junior high, Jefferson is the only new school opening this year in Granite District. Dr. Duzette was born in Emery County, educated at the University of Utah and Brigham Young University, and has also studied in Germany. She has been with the district for 12 years, teaching at West Lake junior high where she also served as South Kearns Opening Day Anticipated r WEST JORDAN LOCATION THE BEST can 967-333- 8 4370 So. Garfield Has Long History Continued from page 1 she could not handle all the responsibilities, so the acreage was taken over by one of her sons Arthur Kesler. He and his wife lived there until approximately 1900, then they sold the ranch to Alonzo P. Kesler, a brother, and Henry Dinwoodey, who stocked the spread with purebred cattle. This venture proved to be a prosperous one for the next five years until the land was sold to the American Smelting and Refining Co Other early-dasettlers in the area included Israel Spitz, a man of Jewish descent, who was the last homesteader to sell out to the copper company and who got the most money His homestead of 160 acres was south west of the cave on dry farm land. Spitz was the original ice man in Salt Lake City, and provided ice for the railroad companies which he cut from the little ponds around the valley. As he grew older, his two sons took over the business and he moved to Point of West Mountains The horses that were too old to be used on the ice wagon were put to work on the farm . .
