Show 6B THE GREEN SHEET Thursday, August 20, 1987 Hollywood Writers Lacking In Creativity &,W4 n A4. $$ ? m AA fc i 4 '&- - : A t jm fi4 S rf- 6.9 (Mark is in Las Vegas attending the Video Software Dealers Assn, convention and will resume his regular column next week. He did leave the following.) Is Hollywood suffering from a shortage of creativity? Sometimes it seems that way with all of the sequels that get put into theaters every year. What may be perceived as a lack creativity is actually an overly active dose of greed to cash in on a hot box office film by knocking out parts 2, 3, 4. etc. Often the sequels dont live up to the original and the audiences feel ripped off. Examples abound. Remember Richard Roundtree as Shaft! It was the first time that a Black private detective was portrayed as the good guy and this low budget film made millions for those concerned. The producers got greedy and knocked off a few sequels and even a television show, all of which met with an eroding audience. In fact, the television show was deemed a disaster from the first episode. The Friday the 13th series was a clever ideal for the original film and the first sequel but the following en of were rehashes of the first two with very little attention paid to tries 3-- 6 quality or intelligent plotting. They became predictable, dreary and altogether stupid. Psycho, a masterpiece of terror from Alfred Hitchcock, was done so well that it actually affected people who used to enjoy taking showers instead of baths. Following Hitchcocks death we got Psycho II and III which just didnt live up to the original terror which was created mostly in the mind and without the blood and gore. It's not surprising that in the slice and dice films which turn up yearly the use of overt gore is likened to the chase scenes used on television. If you cant think of something for the characters to say, throw in blood, gore, or a chase to fill the spot. Now we come to the Star Wars trilogy which, while lavishly produced and entertaining, started to look a little gray around the edges by the third installment. It is a credit to George Lucas that he wrapped it in three films rather than dragging it out until R2D2 had a beard and Luke Skywalker was a grandfather. Of course, not all sequels have suffered from tedium and a perfect example of that is the Pink Panther T O Diffrent Strokes 10:30 World of Disney 0Q Wonderful Sesame Street g Contact Smurfs (D 4:30 g 0 (MO,WE,TH,FR) O (TU) NBC Nightly News O Benson (D Boomerang Flintstones MORNING 5:00 0 Down to Earth O CBS Morning News 5:15 O Before Hours NBC News at Sunrise 5:30 O Morning Stretch 5:45 CD A.M. It would serve Hollywood well to look around its vast pool of writing talent for some new ideas instead of leaving it up to the independent producers who, in many cases, spend years trying to get the accountant types (the suits) who represent the conglomerates who own the studios, to put an original idea into production. If it wasnt for the independant film makers originality might become an endangered species. If Michael Eisner at Disney can create Touchstone Films (a very bold and daring thing to do at Mickeys home) giving us original films such as Ruthless People and other box office hits why can't the other studios take a chance on a new idea from a new writer? After all, they couldt do any worse than Heaven 's Gate, Howard the Duck, or more Friday the 13th films. . The use of new ideas from new writers and using new directors and actors will freshen up the movies and probably be money better spent than making Ishtar. Raiders of the Lost Ark was a twist on the Saturday matinee serial and again, care was taken with the script, the right casting mix, production values and the quality had audiences showing up two or more times. House came along with horror and humor causing movie goers to turn out for it. No one had given this idea a really quality shot since William Castle made 13 Ghosts but House proved that comedy and terror can be mixed if those in charge know what they are doing. Disneys The Love Bug was a fresh idea and one of that studios biggest hits. A car with its own personality was fresh, inoffensive and a treat for adults as well as kids, thus proving that features can be made which appeal to everyone. We all have our favorite film characters and enjoy seeing them in various situations. Nothing wrong with that. The rub is when the producers crank out substandard sequels with little, if any, thought to the script content thus cheating the audience. Bond first appeared on the screen in Dr. No and through four Bonds has managed to stay alive because Cubby Broccoli and his team always kept the films fresh and loaded with action, gadgets and very pretty girls. While Roger Moore was, in my opinion, miscast and some of the plots were ridiculous during his tenure, the Bond legend is back on track with Timothy Dalton as Bond in The Living Daylights. If you ask the studios why they milk a good idea to death theyll whip out the balance sheets and say Because people pay to see them, which is true. But what are the alternatives? Consider Nightmare On Elm Street. It was entertaining and successful and an alternative to the Friday series. Good tight scripting, 6:30 0 0 Tonight rip-off- Charles P.l.
