Show BEARS "WONDER TEAM" REPEATS California, Since Defeat of i Marines, Bowls Over Pessimists i BKKKKLRT, ('al. ( . t 19. I Strength displayed by the University of i California football team In Its early season games especially against the Mare Island Marines, has caused many formerly pessimistic followers of the Bears to change their beliefs and proclaim pro-claim the 1922 California eleven as another an-other "wonder team." Playing against the Marines the California offensive worked like B machine nnd ran up SO points. On defensive the Bear line was unbreakable unbreak-able and the soldiers of the sea failed to score a point. California, in thei Marine game, played without several of It.s BtatS, including Brick Mullcr. I Its all-American end. and Captain Charley Erb, quarterback. Coach Andy Smith has developed two excellent sets of backfield players with substitutes for each. (m combination com-bination the first combination would be Erb at quarter. Nichols ami Spauldlng, halfbacks, and Nesbit at full, pn the other backfield would be Evans al quarter Dunn and Burgess, halfbacks ami Morrison at fullback. Burgess, one of the "finds" of the season, in expected to develop into one of California's greatest forward passers. pass-ers. Mullcr. of course, excepted. Burgess Bur-gess gets distance in his passes, but as yet ho knows little of the other iluties of a halfback. He is learning rapidly, however. on |
