Show September 22, page 2 Student leaders gather at Snowbird workshop By Joe Brady & Steve Largent Staff reporters "Building For The Future" was the theme for the ASWSC leadership conference held September 8-11 at Snowbird, Utah. In attendance were 80 student leaders and advisors, representing 31 different organizations and committees on campus. The conference was directed and organized by the Leadership committee, with Chairman Kelly Oram; Advisor Deanne Spencer and committee members Julie Crimin, Steve Largent, Becky Mem-mott, Jennette Wood, Roxanne Anderson and Lori Memmott. The purpose of the conference was twofold, according to Deanne Spencer, Coordinator of Student Activities. First, to train good leaders and second to give all the leaders an opportunity to get to know each other so that they may work together effectively. To help meet these purposes, several workshops and social activities were held. The keynote address was given by Doris Taggert, vice president of Zion's First National Bank. She emphasized that we need to learn to laugh, and not to dwell on the negative things in life. Workshops presented were Problem Solving and Decision Making by Grant Protzman and Roxanne Anderson; Personal Development by Mary Jo LaTullipe and Julie Crimin; Planning Activities by Deanne Spencer and Lori Memmott; Communication Skills in Leadership by Jay Clegg and Steve Largent; Transactional Analysis and 'Attaboys' by Dr. Tom Musgrave; and Leadership Styles by Grant Protzman. Special seminars were taught by President Rodney Brady on Time Manage ment and by Dr. Alma Harris on Motivating Volunteers. Along with the class-like activities, the leaders enjoyed a lively country western dance, an awards breakfast, best-dress banquet and relaxed at a pillow concert and movie. Student leaders enjoyed the conference and each had their favorite parts. Steve Garner, an Institute Officer said, "that was the best dance I'd ever been to." "The most useful part to me was the planning workshop," said Kevin Beard of Black Scholars United. According to Rick Southwick, ASWSC academic V.P., the conference was very valuable. He said, "I feel that people in an organization are important, especially after attending several workshops on working with people. I want to develop good leadership skills, have an impact in my area and work effectively with people this year." A large amount of money was spent on the conference. Each student attending the conference paid $40 which covered about 40 percent of the actual cost. Critics have suggested that too much money was spent on too few students. However, the Leadership Committee felt that the conference was worth the expense, particularly if each student leader will use what he learned to improve his organization or committee. According to Jeannette Wood, "The conference was a valuable learning experience. It will create better campus leaders, if they apply the material they learned during the conference," Mrs. Spencer said, "I like to see students go home from the conference motivated." Many felt that it is now up to the student leaders to make the conference worthwhile to the entire student body. grille ...A Specialized Athletic Store in the Ogden City Mall WEBER COLLEGE SPECIALS Student or Faculty ID reqested IF YOU'RE AN ACTIVE PERSON... or want to be, we've got some grand news for you!
