Show spores September 22, page 13 Weber loses to Uta fate 31 By Tony Ritchie Sports Editor Last Saturday in Logan's Romney stadium, Weber State . fell to favored rival Utah State 31-18. Before the game took - place, coach Price pointed out, "expect Weber to take chances," and that's exactly what happen - , ed. As the first quarter began, the '' Weber offense seemed to be having problems. Milt Myers, who ' looked so impressive in the season opener against Idaho, couldn't quite connect with his " receivers, causing Weber to turn the ball over to Utah. Aggie quarterback Chico Canales on the other hand kept finding his and with 6:15 left in the first quarter Canales connected with Freddie Fernandez to give Utah a " 7-0 lead. Again Meyers had trouble finding a receiver and again "Canales didn't, with only 51 - seconds left in the first quarter he found Eric McPherson open and - extended the Aggie lead to 14. There was no scoring in the second quarter, as Webers defense flayed very tough and wouldn't let Canales do any more damage. Webers defense did a fine job without much time to rest, as the Aggies controlled the - ball for 20 minutes while Weber only had it for 9. Myers, who had broke a school record for passing last week, only threw 6-18 in the first half, as he was heavily pressured bv the Aggie defense. Early in the second half Weber linebacker John Full-ington blocked an Aggie punt, putting Weber inside Aggie territory. From there Myers threw two quick passes that put the ball on the Aggie one yard line. On first and goal Myers dove into the Aggie end zone making it a 7-14 ballgame. The momentum of the game was now Weber's as both Aggie fans and pressbox were suddenly silenced. Webers defense again stymied the Aggies, forcing them again to turn the ball over. Weber was also held at mid-field by the strong Aggie defense, forcing Weber to kick. In possibly the turning point of the game Curt Miller, instead of punting, threw deep into Aggie territory. The ball was to be caught by a Weber receiver. The pass, ruled incomplete, was brought back to mid-field giving the Aggies good field position. Coach Price's gamble had failed, and as fate would have it, the Aggies drove down the remainder of the field to score and make it a 21-7 ballgame. The momentum of the game had again changed hands, but this time it was to stay with Utah State. In the next series, Weber was again forced to punt. Miller's 37 yard kick landed in the hands of Utah's Freddie Fernandez, who ran 63 yards to the other end of the field and another Aggie touchdown. The only other score in the third was made by Weber State asms? A23 place kicker Roger Ruzak who connected on a 47 yard field goal making it a 28-10 ball game. Early in the fourth quarter, the gutsy Weber defense sacked Aggie quarterback Doug Samuels in the end zone for a Weber safety. Utah's final score of the game was a 29 yard field goal by Aggie kicker Willie Beecher which made it 31-19. Weber's Tim Ber-nal came off the bench late in the fourth quarter to replace Myers as quarterback. Bernal guided the Cats down field and with 2:54 remaining in the ball game ran the ball five yards for the final Wildcat touch down. The extra point was stopped and the score remained 31-18 at the final gun. The Wildcats had lost, mainly because their many offensive attempts had failed. Weber's defense played very well throughout the long period of time they spent on the field. After the game, Coach Price commented, "The only thing I'm disappointed in was our failure to score when we had the chances. I'm just as proud of these guys as I was four hours ago." Aggie coach Bruce Snyder saw a very improved Wildcat team. "I knew how tough they would be so we were ready for them." Coach Price's risk didn't pay off this time. However, in terms Of future events it will be interesting to see how "it might have been." G . i WEBER STATE BOOKSTORE -iiSM" ait"'" ' v..
