Show Thursday, June 14, 2007 OREM TIMES Page 7 X 'f' Bret Lopez of Timpanogos was named All-Valley Baseball Player of the Year. Neil Warner NORTH COUNTY The number posted was an astounding .785. Rounded up that's 79 percent. Seventy-nine percent? What's that for? The per-' centage of times the New York Yankees' payroll has topped $200 million over the past 10 years? No, it's someone's batting batting average. Impossible. No one can do anything 79 percent of the time in sports. In basketball, the record for career field-goal percentage is held by Artis Gillmore at .599 and the highest single-season percentage is owned by Wilt Chamberlain at .727. In football, Ken Anderson holds the record for highest completion percentage for a season at 70.5 percent. In baseball, the number .785 or 79 percent does not exist. No one has ever had a batting average of .790. The last person per-son to hit over .400 was Ted Williams and that was in 1941. So what does the number .785 have to do with high school baseball? It's the batting average Bret Lopez had during the state tournament. When the pressure was the greatest, when the team needed him the most, when Timpanogos had to have a run, Lopez was at his best. That is why the Daily Herald has named Lopez the Utah Valley Baseball Player of the Year. "He w.as hands down the leader on our team," said teammate team-mate Nash Fowler. "He was probably the one who was the most consistent all year. He took charge and helped us a ton." Talk about a tournament to remember. Check out these state tournament accomplishments: I He made only three outs in five state tournament games. I He drove in 11 runs during the tournament. I Against Viewmont he hit a two-run homer and walked four times, three on intentional ASHLEY FRANSCELLNorth County passes. He was 1 l-of-14 with two triples and two home runs.
