The fastest growing sport in the nation, it is growing by 30% each year here in Utah. Lacrosse is an action packed sport perhaps best described as a cross between soccer and ice hockey. Lacrosse is also one of the oldest sports in America as it was first played by Native Americans. It moves fast and is a blast to watch Weber High had an amazing season this year. The varsity team captured a 3rd Place win in the state championships with a superb team and brand new superstar coaches Jeff Pendergast and Paul Goggi. Spencer Bowen was named to the Ist Team, All-State Team, and Levi Johnson and Clint Calder were named to the All-Star Team. eber’s Junior Varsity also had a great year. LACROSSE Recreation Element of Ogden Valley General Plan Receives Ogden Valley’s General Plan (OVGP) Recreation Element Project recently won an award of merit at the 6th Annual Utah Govemnor'é Quality Growth Awards Program where they recognize exemplary projects and communities that keep Utah beautiful, prosperous, and nei ighborly for future generations. Their goal is to honor organizations that are contributing to Utah’s livability. The Ogden Valley Recreation Element Plan Promotes Utah Livability, by providing protection policies and implementation strategies including development and adoption ofa Monte Opens for Summer State Honor sensitive lands ordinance, development and implementation of an open space program with purchase of development rights, creation of clustered resort village centers, and development and implementation of a transfer ofig es ae rights program. Recreation Element of the Ogden valley General Plan is a policy document that serves as a guide to staff, property developers, and Weber County governing bodies in response to the wants, needs, and desires of the communit s the growing demand for recreational activities and resort development. Through extensive public involvement, the OVGP Recreation Element establishes criteria and direction for recreation planning with guidelines and standards for recreation resort development including identification of sensitive lands, creation of transfer of development rights and purchase of development rights programs, and cooperation between land management agencies in Ogden Valley. Huntsville Native Receives Prestigious Award Valley Elementary teacher and Huntsville resident Carol Ann Stoker is the 2006 recipient of the Mattie Wattis Harris Spirit of the American Woman Award. She was honored May 20 at Weber State University for her work in public education. This award honors those in the field of public education who have made a positive impact in the lives of their pupils and have created many opportunities for growth and development. This prestigious awards event is sponsored by Your Community Connection (YCC), and allows the organization the opportunity to recognize the many individuals who have devoted themselves to serving others. The recipients are recognized for their ability to exhibit courage, strength, and resiliency as they achieve advocacy, leadership, creativity, initiative, and service. Carol Stoker has the most important job in pecs today—that of a teacher. She states that she feels that the children she teaches are the hope for the future. To better prepare these children, Carol’s goal was to return to school and receive her master’s degree. Friends of Parker Jones Parker, son of Rulon and Kathy Jones of Liberty, is a student with deafblindness who attends Valley Elementary. In an effort for Parker to have more mutual positive a tion with his typically developing pee: rt Rice (Parker’s Communication ise began making note of peers who have shown special interest in Parker. February, these peers, from all different grades within the school, were invited to participate in a deafblind simulation conducted by consultants from the Utah Schools for the Deaf and the Blind, Deafblind Service Division. The simulation activity consisted of each student taking turns wearing eye masks and earphones to simulate, in a small measure, what it is like to be deafblind. In the activity, half of the group served as helpers (Communication Interveners) to guide ‘their temporarily deafblind friends through mobility, exploration, and tasting activities. The tables were then turned as the helpers adopted a temporary disability by wearing the masks and headphones. simulation activity was followed up by an open discussion about how Parker’s peers felt, and what they learned about deafblindness from the activi Finally, Parker was introduced on a more personal level to his peers. Parker’s likes, dislikes, communication methods, skills, and disabilities were addressed through a question and answer session. Then, ideas of how to effectively interact with Parker and support him in participating with his peers were discussed. The students were encouraged to create a “name sign” (a tactile cue unique to the individual) that they can use to identify themselves each time they interact with Parker. The actual election is June 27, 2006 Where: Ogden Valley Public Library When: June 22, 2006, 6:30 p.m. Who: All voting Ogden Valley residents and other interested parties. How: There will be a short DVD presentation (approx. 12 min.) followed by a question and answer period.
