Mrs. Vaatuitui’s second grade class has invited Parker and Art to spend time in their classroom each morning. She also invited Students participate in simulation. Deafblind Services to return to Valley Elementary to repeat the peer training simulation activity with her entire class. Alls dents now a greater knowledge and appreciation for their friend Parker. The activity eliminates fear and misunderstanding of people with disabilities; and breeds empathy, tolerance, and compassion. The individualized format enabled the con- recitals, dance programs, and coaches softball and T-ball for “her” kids. Carol also started the Peer Helper Program at Valley Elementary. This program allows selected students the opportunity to use their leadership skills to help other students. To Carol, every child is a special child; every child is loved; every child is a super student; and every child is an achiever. No child is ever left behind. When a student was asked by her mother why she liked Miss Stoker for a teacher, the girl quickly replied, “Because she loves us.” Carol’s involvement does not end at her school. She is involved in various service projects for her community, school, and church. The Winter Special Olympics, Huntsville’s Jr. Rodeo, and the Huntsville Planning Commission have all benefited from Carol’s involvement. Valley Elementary and the community are better places because of Carol. A Quilt of Loving Hands Second grade teachers Candy Facer, Amy Hedges, Julie Vaatuitui, and Tina Allred came up with an idea to honor Mrs. Ann Whitehead and her upcoming retirement after 26 years of teaching. They decided on a quilt—something the students could participate in creating as well. Mitzi Deeter and her quilting abilities were called upon along with Marcine Montgomery’s. They all knew that green was Mrs. Whitehead favorite color, so they went to the fabric store and picked out different materials in ranrine shades of green. They took the fabric and cut it into squares and brought them to the school. Teachers, mothers, and others conspired with Valley 2nd grade ge to keep the project a secret from sultants from Deafblind Services to target individuals who truly had an interest in being part of Parker’s school day. Over one hundred squares went home with Mitzi Deeter and Marcine Montgomery on Friday to be sewn together, hemmed, and batted. The following Monday, Mitzi brought the quilt back and the students’ mothers set up and tied it in less than an hour. Each student was able to see the quilt progressing step by step.
