Show vw “THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Page 3 June 1, 2006 Letters to the Editor Thank You Miss Becky and Teacher Chris I just returned home after picking up Jessica, my youngest child, from her last day of preschool at The Old Firehouse. This ends our 8-year run of entrusting our four children to the care of Becky and Chris Daugaard and their staff. It is hard to put into words what childcare providers give to a mother, and I am grateful to these two big-hearted people for giving to the Valley a much-needed place for children to play and learn and grow. The Old Fire House has provided a safe, fun, enriching place for kids to go. Becky and Chris have been diligent in following safety and health guidelines, providing ongoing education for their teachers, applied for and received grants to improve the school, helped families in great need, and provided summer camp opportunities. But, mainly, they provide a caring, gentle place for kids. Although my children ns no longer be playing there twice a week, I will not soon forget the impact this preschool has had on my family. My laundry room is decorated ca 2) a 1 with the obligatory yet cherished handprints I have received from each of my children at Mother’s Day that were made at The Old Fire House. We have a family photo on the day Jessica was born with 5 year old John Michael in face paint because he was able to be dropped off for last-minute care when baby Jessica was making a premature entrance on have Julianne’s red mortarboard and size four graduation gown worn when she graduated from the kindergarten class with the legendary “Miss Pat.” Finally, | have the memof Jacob sitting on Santa’s lap at the annual Christmas program asking for suction cups so he could climb the walls and walk on the ceiling. Thank you “Miss Becky” and “Teacher Chris” for all of your sacrifices to provide this wonderful Learning Center to our Valley. You have been a big part of our lives and I know that there are many more families who feel the gratitude that we do. Melissa Lewis, Eden Illegal Immigrants Think Lawbreaking OK It’s Not Too Late to Show Your Support! The United States admits over 700,000 legal immigrants every year; so it appears there is no attempt to prevent legal immigration. M of the advocates for illegal immigration say it is acceptable to break the immigration laws to illegally enter our country, yet these same advocates consistently espouse the mantra on social issues that “we are a nation of laws.” I would like these advocates to tell me which of the federal laws the rest of us can choose to ignore because we don’t agree with them. Equal opportunity laws? Civil-rights laws? Larry Zini, Huntsville Fundraiser for School a Success The staff and families at Ogden Valley Montessori School would like to thank the many businesses and individuals who contributed to the silent auction held on Saturday, May 20. It was a great success and we appreciate everyone’s generosity in helping us to reach our goal of building a playground this summer at the school. Ogden Valley is a wonderful community, and we are blessed to live in, and be a pa it. I believe the students from our school will be in a position to give back to this Valley in significant ways as they reach their adult years. They will have fond memories of the caring people who live here. The names of all those who donated to our silent auction will be placed on tiles on a wall at our new playground. Thank you from all the children at Ogden Valley Montessori School who will enjoy this playground for years to come. We’d like to give a big thanks to those who have turned in letters of support for the proposed Thomas Edison Charter School of Ogden Valley. While we have already received over eight dozen individual letters, we are seeking to double this number during the next three weeks. Our 20 minute Be ok ne the Department of Education (250 E.500 S. SLC) is slated for June 15. We, along with ive other applicants will be presenting our proposals beginning at 10:00 a.m. Anyone who wishes to attend may do so. We took the opportunity to observe some presentations last week and want to take an approach that is unique, yet maintain a high degree of professionalism. | Other applicants had graphic visuals displayed across a large screen. The ones that we observed did not have evidence of community support; that’s where the letters would come in. With our visual/digital presentation, we are askina permission to take a snapshot of children who may be attending the proposed charter school. The photos will be transferred to computer disk and only used to support our presentation. We’d be happy to come to your home, door-todoor at your convenience or, if we miss you at home, we are also at the Huntsville Park on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 to 11 a.m.; please stop by. There are too many of us who will be disappointed should this opportunity to have some choice in education slip through our fingers. If you’d like to send a letter via email, it looks best as an attachment. ie most effective strategy is to create a letter that you can copy at least ten times and have friends, family, coworkers, etc., in and outside the Valley, sign individually. We can arrange to collect these letters at your convenience. Thank you Ogden Valley for your support of this effort.
