scarcity By rejecting Marxism Solzhenitsyn and those who think like him render themselves incapable of explaining the events that have affected them so deeply Trotsky was fond of quoting Spinoza: "Do not laugh do not cry but understand" Solzhenitsyn laughs bitterly and cries a great deal He doesn't understand very much Neither Marx Lenin nor Trotsky ever believedthat it would be possible to build a socialist classless society in one country alpne still less an economically underdeveloped country Nevertheless the slightest bit of moral feeling for the misery in the world today and the catastrophes that threaten humanity leads to the conclusion that it is necessary to redouble efforts to bring about the victory of the world socialist revolution which nnrirlprvtellv) wmilH eliminate the Dnlice reoression and the bureaucracies in the workers states of the Soviet Union and China In the Soviet intellectual opposition there are many wings and tendencies united only by the common struggle against Stalinist repression and for the real reconquest of civil rights that are formally guaranteed in the Soviet constituion The left wing of this opposition of which Pyotr Grigorenko is the most stirring figure is composed of surviving old Bolsheviks militant Leninists who by their exemplary courage are defen- ding and rehabilitating revolutionary socialism in the “eyes of Soviet youth What a windfall it is for the Kremlin to be able to denounce the antisocialist ideology of Solzhenitsyn (while of course not daring to publish his books) The bureaucracy's task of suprressing oppositionists who claim allegiance to Marx and Lenin is much less rewarding The capitalists want to concentrate attention on the Gulag in order to divert attention from their own crimes and to whip up hostility to revolutionary socialism All true defenders of democratic rights and civil liberties must defend the rights hot only of the Solzhenitsyns but also of the Marxist and Leninist oppositionists to freely speak discuss publish and organize in the USSR The experience of reading the Gulag should be an occasion of renewed dedication to the defense of democratic rights Recent revelations of the secret activities of the C A at home and abroad indicate that our present rulers are not committed to the preservation of freedom and democracy Exposure of some of the secret activities of the office of the President the FBL the Pentagon the IRS and other branches of the government underline a real threat to democratic j i M ij ft j f I f j I I rights In this context Solzhenitsyn has an important message for us Throughout the Gulag he draws at- tention to the failure of himself and millions of others tc resist the repression as it began and then gathered momentum j jj j |
