commercialism'or celebrity that have tainted the Olympics These people aft amateurs who compete for the love of the sport and not dreams of product endorsements or being worshipped as a hero We’ve seen this happen in professional sports and now it is getting into the Olympics Too many athletes seem to think their skills entitle them to ' special treatment and adulation You ' see this with Olympic athletes who complain about judging professional athletes who think nothing of doing The (Provo) Daily Herald I f you're going through Olympic withdrawal there’s some help coming soon The 2002 Paralympic Games are dated to start March 7 when disabled athletes from around the world will compete in hockey skiing and other winter sports While these Games don't get the full spotlight of the 2002 Wipter Games we think the Paralympics celebrates the true spirit of the Olympics While the regular Games show us what humans at the peak of physical fitness can do the Paralympics demonstrates the unconquerable nature of the human spirit The athletes of the Paralympics are either paralyzed missing limbs or have other physical disabilities Yet these men and women will hit the slopes and the ice and compete as hard as if not harder than their counterparts If you thought the downhill slalom looked impressive it is even itiore so when you realize the skier you’re watching cannot walk without assistance able-bodi- ' drugs or assaulting people or even high school athletes who believe their varsity jackets are a license to bully other students But you don’t see that with Paralympians who' participate for the love of their sports and the it brings them They approach their spot with a greater humility and are grateful just for the chance to compete They are true athletes and we should show them the same enthusiasm and support we did for the athletes of the 2002 Winter self-maste- ry ed Russia leading on tax front q 'Olympics By Daroy Murdock Scrippa Howard News Service
