Show COMMENT T ON UTAH MINES AND PROSPECTS 1 11 the season is now so far advanced that the prospector can begin to do satisfactory work in many portions of the state there are many sections where important discoveries should be made it careful investigation is faithfully carried out and it is not necessary to go into absolutely virgin territory either in order to meet with success we have in mind two points which should appeal to the prospector both of these are silver lead bearing the first one is located in cache county about miles northeast of ogden it is called la plata about twenty years ago two prospectors working up high in the wasatch mountain range found great boulders of silver lead ore on the surface this was float but so large that one or two of them were larger than freight cars on this ground the sundown group of claims was located and the boulders of ore were broken up and shipped to the smelters shelters sm elters great excitement cit ement prevailed over the discovery and it il was not long before la plata was a prosperous and active camp with every natural facility abounding as the country is well watered and heavily timbered other properties were located including the sunrise and la plata the ore was a heavy carbonate sand carbonates and galena and the ore ledges strong and well defined extensive operations were inaugurated and the outlook was most promising when the central pacific railroad began ousting proceedings claiming that it owned the ground by virtue of a government grant this precipitated litigation and it was not long oe before fore the camp became almost deserted the litigation hung on for years but by the time it was decided in favor of the mineral claimants la plata district had become almost entirely forgotten A few ers held on the sunrise for a year or two has been extensively developed by a boston crowd which has recently secured a lease and bond on the sundown outside of this but little is being done there but to the prospector this should be a most inviting field the mining review is informed that a few miles up city creek canyon where the first fork of the creek comes in from the north a mining camp existed thirty years ago that had at least inhabitants there is nothing there now but a few old cabins and a number of ancient dumps and dilapidated mine workings considerable ore is to be found scattered over the surface and on the old dumps it is a tine lead carbonate and sand carbonate we know that the old shacks dumps and tunnel workings are there for we have seen them here is a chance for anyone who is really interested in mine discovery there may be great mines existing there then again they may not amount to anything to the average man maj 1 they are too near a city of inhabitants to be good wo we believe that a description of this camp can be found in the archives of the state historical society there will be a great deal of activity in the south fork of big cottonwood cotton wood canyon this year and already preparations are being made for extensive operation in the workings of the howell mine the old baby mckee another rich shoot of ore has been encountered and it begins to look as if this would develop into one of the big lead producers of the state at the utah mines coalition ore is showing everywhere and much of it is of very high grade in the north drift of the cardiff two feet of the finest kind of ore is showing and the management feels much encouraged the rexall under its new management expects to make a great showing this year while work is being started in earnest in the development of the tar baby the verda mining milling coin company pany operating near the mouth of big cottonwood canyon is making excellent progress in mine development the tunnel is well mineralized and it is expected the ledge will soon be encountered activity also prevails at the old maxfield and this old dividend payer should give a good account of itself this year A great deal of activity will be noticeable in the marysvale Marys vale section this seas season cin the leading properties now receiving attention being the bully boy shamrock cascade wedge deer trail monte del rey and the L N it being the intention of the latter to put on a big force as soon as the roads make easy access possible in american fork canyon a busy season is promised and extensive operation is being planned for this splendid old camp in the pacific mine one of its most promising properties a two foot body of almost solid galena ore was recently encountered in other properties throughout the district the showing is also excellent american fork canyon has not received we attention of late years that its extensive has so richly deserved now however with the keen demand for silver lead ores at the several smelters shelters sm elters american fork should be more extensively developed and prospected the old honorine near stockton is reported to be in excellent physical condition this old property is now owned by the bullion coalition company and is now shipping regularly lease as well as company ores old ophir expects a ref renewal of prosperity this year the cliff mine is doing well so well in fact that it recently entered the dividend paying column the lion hill consolidated also is putting in a bid tor lor recognition and popularity and has been sending in some very fine ore of late park city mines are more than holding their own of the outlook for the silver king coalition too much cannot well be said for it is reported that in the mine workings such mammoth bodies of high grade ore exist as almost to defy computation of its value the silver king consolidated also is reported to be looking exceedingly well the company has been making shipments of late and it is stated that several of its workings are in gaoa ore the daly west and the daly judge are also in excellent physical condition while much is expected from the american flag work on an extensive scale will soon be inaugurated by the leasers leaders of the old ontario but little has been heard of late concerning the districts of beaver county but it is known that the mines in that section are prosperous the south utah is producing about tons of crude ore monthly and as soon as additions to the mill equipment are completed the company will be making copper at the rate of pounds per month ithe majestic is reported to be looking well at the horn silver some iery ery good ore has been marketed market bd of late the moscow is producing regularly and the red warrior continues to block out large volumes of ore an important strike is reported in the progressive while the commonwealth lease is sending in occasional shipments tintic gintic district holds the center of the stage in interest in mining and stock circles it is a great camp and it will be generations before the extent of its marvelous ore deposits are really known the showing in the uncle sam is considered as being remarkable and it is stated that good marketable ore is showing in the mine workings in three places beek beck tunnel is in a most interesting te condition and especially so since a cave has been enco encountered mitered in lowing following tol a new ore zone if the beek beck should open up another new and independent ore shoot there is no telling to what point its stock will reach conditions are reported as being most promising at the carisa some ore is being taken from the raise on the for shipment and work is being crowded on the the showing in the swansea consolidated soli dated is most e encouraging n cou raging on the the shaft has cut the vein showing in the workings on the it is stated that there is a most encouraging showing Z in the yankee consolidated and that the 1830 foot shaft is in weli well mineralized ground the gold chain is sending out quite a heavy tonnage the chief consolidated is now in position with its fine new hoist to more than duplicate its splendid record of the past the centennial eureka and iron blossom continue to hold their record as being the premier producers of the dist district brict colorado and grand central being the next heaviest shippers of the precious metals in speaking of bingham nothing can be said but what would be a repetition of what has already been reported time after time in these columns the visitor to the camp is always wonder struck at the activity prevailing there one not acquainted with the operations of this great camp can comprehend by a mere recital of what is going on there the magnitude of its ore production much of the camp is like a vast open quarry shots fired at regular intervals echo and re echo over the valley until at times in salt lake city the opinion prevails that a heavy thunder storm is holding sway over in the oquirrh range |
