Show Scotch Bottle ! American Racism foresight to make the streets exceptionally ex-ceptionally wide our traffic problems prob-lems are handled better today because be-cause he planned for the future. Will we have the foresight to change our equality views for the good of the future, or will we have to tear down old barriers sometime in the tomorrow when society demands that change finally be made. Can we make our civil rights roads long and broad or will they be short and narrow so that they will require alterations? The decision rests on each responsible citizen. We know that changing the course of poorly planned roads is expensive. expen-sive. I know that changing the course of prejudiced thoughts is even more expensive it may even mean your life. By RON SCOTT t March 6, he spoke to us about ciVii rights. He told us that the Negro was tired of waiting for an opportunity to get ahead. He told us that violence wasn't the answer f- DUt this was the only solution the Negro could find. Before whites were happy with the progressive civil rights program, but little was i beulg accomplished he said now the whites are scared and are will-, will-, ing to get the problem solved. These were some of the thoughts expressed by Roy Jefferson, a for-);. for-);. mer- University of Utah football star, and now a professional foot-vill foot-vill player for the Pittsburg Steelers, uc in Dan Jones' Political Science class. . "Black power," he said, "means f! equal power. Why should Negroes . spend money fifty miles from home t when they can buy the same com-r com-r modifies in his own community. If Negroes would do this he would 4 be investing in the development of his community." My Country " "I went back to Compton, Calif., for a vacation. I saw one of my old ; friends, Elmer. He had changed. I ' found out later that he had become a Black Nationalist. I didn't agree with his methods but I do agree with the goals of the organization. . I would fight in Vietnam because this is my country. It really is the only place I can call home. After all we have lived here for over 200 years what other country could we call home." "I had trouble finding a place to live in Salt Lake. After being turned down so many times I really became be-came angered. But when I found , a place that anger left me. Even two-faced liberals wouldn't rent r to me. I would prefer that a man be open about his prejudices. I sell life insurance a guy told me 7 "When I was in the Army my best friend was a Negro" the guy was trying to excuse his prejudices it's wrong." Mr. Jones wrapped up the night with comments that a Negro won't really be equal as long as we regard re-gard him as a Negro instead of another an-other human being. "What country has made more progress in civil rights than the U.S.? What country has a Negro in its Senate, and as a member of its highest court?" Hot Summer This summer will be a long, hot one. President Johnson's report on the riots showed that America is a racist nation. We know that attitudes atti-tudes aren't changed over night but it has to have a beginning somewhere. That somewhere is in your attitudes. Yes, I'm prejudice more than likely you are too even though you won't admit it. But this movement move-ment has to begin with you it's like an internal cat and dog fight but when the battle is over you will be the better man. Roy said, "You don't have to go out of your way to meet Negroes, but when the opportunity presents itself in your normal life don't be offended be human about it." So here we sit sheltered by the majestic Rockies to the east. They almost keep us out of contact with the real outside. We read about the riots in Detroit, Newark, and New Haven, and say to ourselves "it couldn't happen here in Zion." Living Liv-ing in other cities I know that the people there said to themselves, "it couldn't happen here" but it did. Change Outlook We can change before it's too late. Salt Lakers can change their attitudes in time. But will we, or do we lack the planning that other large cities have lacked? In the early days Brigham Young had the |
