Show 4 THE GREEN SHEET Thursday, May 7, 1987 Titan Crew Stops Pirates On Friday HOLLADAY. After some shakey moments in the past couple of weeks or so, Olympus steadied itself Frihome victory day by earning a over Cyprus, the Titans leading all the way. Both teams are still very much in the running for a post season berth, both tied for third. Olympus hosts Cottonwood tomorrow (Friday) and then travels to Skyline Tuesday, while Cyprus entertains Granite tomorrow and visits Cottonwood Tuesday. All of the above action will start at 3:30 p.m. Olympus actually got all the runs it would need in the bottom of the first, a Brent Burton single, a walk and a single by Brian Hill loading the bases. Then a walk forced in a run, Jeff Davies scored one with a sacrifice fly and Chip Ehlers singled 7-- 3 5 in two. Cyprus got a run in the top of the third, Clint Meyer tripling and scoring on a Bill Robbs single. Two more Pirate runs crossed the plate in the fourth as Steve Argyle singled, mov Granite ,At - GRANITE PARK. Cyprus highs Preston Lohmeyer turned in one of the most stirring pitching per-- i formances of this or any other high school baseball season Tuesday by no hit throwing a seven-inninshutout at Granite as his team blanked the Farmers Lohmeyer, according to both coaches. LaRon Unk of Cyprus and Mike Reardon of Granite, never wavered in the contest and never gave up anything close to a hit. The Pirates now enter the stretch run in Region Three play hosting resurgent Granger tomorrow (Fri- day) then finishing up at Cottonwood Tuesday. Cyprus hopes to earn a ; 7-- ' . Shewmake made a super defensive play from third to finally shut down the Warrior rally. Both coaches, Mike Folster of Granger and Ron Rushton of Taylorsville, agreed that it wasnt so much a lack of pitching and defense that created the slugfest, as it was just good, solid hitting. Both teams really hit the ball, Folster. Jonas Hamblin, for us, really nailed a couple out onto 5300 So. and nearly had a third." It was simply a case of a lot of hard hit balls, noted Rushton. ;1 SHEDS alternative to the An Barn style shed 6Stud walls Fir siding Fiberglass shingles third place spot in the league, but, if it wins tomorrow, will finish no worse than fourth. Granite never did hit a ball to the outfield and slapped out just five infield grounders, which were played for outs. Preston really (Lohmeyer) handcuffed them, commented Unk. "He had his breaking ball working and he kept the down all game. He only threw 78 pitches. It was a legitimate added Reardon. Lohmeyer just overpowered us. Cyprus opened the scoring with four runs in the top of the first, Lohmeyer helping his own cause by singling in the first run. An gave Murrays Spartans their sixth win against two losses in region play and boosted them into first place with only two games to play. Chad Forrest, who had shut out Tooele earlier in the year on the Buff field, was almost as effective Tuesday as he held the visitors to six hits while striking out seven and walking only two. The win was his sixth of the e and three year, three in in regular season play. Coach Bill Siebenberg pointed out that no Murray pitcher has ever won more than seven during the high school season. This includes such Murray stalwarts as Steve Gehrke, Dave Beck, and Joel Winters. Murray will play South at Derks today (Thursday) and then next Tuesday will travel to Jordan. The Spartans opened the scoring in the first when Brett Bailey walked and stole second, Bolingbroke walked and both moved up on an errant pick off play at first with both scoring as the Tooele players were lackadaisical about getting the ball back into the infield. Cheyenne Winget then walked and Brett long triple into right field chased him home with the third run of the inning. Four more runs crossed the plate for the home team in the second as Scott Kessler singled and stole second, Bailey singled to bring in Kessler then moved to second on a passed ball. Bolingbroke drove Bailey in with a single and Rion Thomas then hit a long home run to score the final pair. Sophomore Jeff Leatherwood then brought in two with a single and moments later a sacrifice fly by Brown sent the fifth run of the game across for Taylorsville. In the seventh after one out, Tolbert and Roberts both walked and Peterson tied the game up when his double brought them both home. After Grant walked Littlewood, Bobby Helm came in to pitch and Leatherwood singled in the winning run. Tolbert started for the winners and was relieved by Littlewood in the fourth, but then came back in the top of the seventh. Grant went until the seventh when he was relieved by Helm. Leatherwood was a perfect 4x4 with Tolbert having a 3x3 day while Dan Schmidt was 3x3 for the Colts with Jewell and Sorensen both having two hits. the Colts score five more which resulted in the replacement of starter Mark Tolbert and brought in Dave Littlewood. After one run, Dean Schmidt and Doug McClure had base hits and Schmidt was sent home on a double by Sean Grant, Jewell then singled in McClure and Greg Carroll followed with another hit to bring in Jewell. John Harris was then intentionally walked and with the bases loaded, Tolbert got the second out of the inning on a strikeout. Brad Sorensen then hit a line drive up the middle to plate the fifth and sixth runs of the game. With Harris on third, Sorensen on first and now pitcher Littlewood on the mound, the third out was gained when the batter bunted and the pitcher easily threw him out at first. The fifth saw Schmidt single and McClure and Grant both walk. Jewell was ejected for protesting the umpires decision and Justin Hawes stepped in, with the count one ball and two strikes, and promptly singled to right to send in Schmidt. The next batter then bunted back to the pitcher who threw to home to catch the runner for a force out. Littlewood then got the next two hitters on a pop up and a strikeout, stranding three Cottonwood runners.
