Show THE SENATE The McGarralian Bill Kilted So far as This Session is Concerned WASHINGTON Jan 17In the Senate Shermanfrom the finance committee has reported 0 bill to suspend silver purchases pur-chases after Jan 1 1894 and allow the national banks to issue circulating notes to the full amount of bonds deposited The bi was placed on the calend rAfter r-After the passage of several unimportant unimport-ant bills and the second installment of Pfeiffers argument in favor of a constitutional consti-tutional amendment limiting the presidential presi-dential office to one year the McGarra han bill was taken up and an argument in support of it made by Mr Wilson of Iowa After some debate the Senate re L t L n fused t pass the bill over the presidents veto by th necessary twothirds vote The vote was yeas 29 nays 18 Ei h votes short of a constitutional majority The Senate bill extending till January 1 1891 time within which payments may be made by settlers on forfeited lands of the Northern Pacific railroad between Wallula and Portland Or passed also the bill for the abandonment of the Fort Bridger military reservation Wyoming The antioplion bill was taken up and Mr Hoar Republican of Massachusetts resumed argument against it on the ground of its unconstitutionally Further arguments against the constitutionality consti-tutionality of thehill were made by Messrs Gray of Delaware Vest of Missouri and Platt of Connecticut Mr Platt will resume i re-sume argument tomorrow After an executive ex-ecutive session the Senate adjourned I |
