Show THE HOUSE A Joint Resolution Passed Fixing Upon a Day to Count the Electoral Vote WASHINGTON Jan 17In the House on motion of Mr Chipman of Michigan a resolution was agreed to making provisions pro-visions for a joint meeting of the two houses of Congress on Wednesday Feb 8 to count the electoral vote The Senate bill passed for the retirement retire-ment of Judge N P Deady who for many years has been associate justice of the supreme court of Oregon as under the existing law he would not have been entitled en-titled to retirement until next year The bill passed providing for terms of the district courts at Evanston Wy Mr Oats of Alabama called up the Senate bill to provide for the punishment of offenses on the high seas I provides that every person who is not one of a crew on board any vessel belonging in whole or in part to any citizen of the United States who shall in defiance of the master create any riot ort disturbance or shall commit a breach of the peace or who shall hinder obstruct or resist the ere win the performance or execution of any law orders or commands of the master mas-ter or officers of such vessel shall be pun isned by a fine not exceeding one thousand thou-sand dollars or by imprisonment not exceeding ex-ceeding one year or by both It places a similar penalty upon any passenger who shall inspire any crew to disobey the law or orders of the master and forbids the crew to combine revolt or mutiny or resist re-sist orders Mr Davis Populist of Kanpas opposed op-posed the measure on the ground that it would make any organization among seamen sea-men almost impossible The bill however how-ever passed and the House adjourned |
