Show MONTANAS CONfEST Two Populists Desert Their Candidate and Go for Dixon The Reasons Stated by Mr Bray Leader of the Populists The Dixon Men Refuse Re-fuse to Go Into Caucus HELENA Mon Jan 17Special The senatorial ballot today was without result though there were some surprises One of the Clark men went over to Dixon and it is thought the Populists also voted for him It haS been supposed all the time that when these two Populists left Mulville they would go t the Republicans cans but instead they have come to the Democrats Bray the leader of the Populists before be-fore voting today made an explanation saying that the representatives of the Peoples party had come to the legislature legisla-ture to act on the principles of the party and for the good of the state They were under instructions to vote for Samuel Mulville and to seek his election While not criticizing the actions of any other on the floor he continued the speaker and myself have done all in our power towards to-wards that end a It is apparent now that the Peoples party cannot at this time elect a United States senator and that we do not even hold the balance of power in this legislature legisla-ture Under these circumstances and after diligently seeking for advice we have come t the conclusion that i we cannot elect a Populist we will give our votes to the next best man We have been put in a trying position but are try inc to discharge our duty a The two Populists declare themselves now ready t vote for one of those whose names have been offered and whose action in Congress has shown that he i one of the best of them After full investigation as to the claims of all we have decided to vote for W W Dixon The Democrats seem t be as far apart as ever and the Dixon men refuse to go into caucus unless Clark absolutely withdraws with-draws from the race and In addition to this they claim the right with eight votes to name the nominee This the majority that nominated Clark refuse to accede to |
