The Rural Water Association will pay for the mayor to go to Washington Feb. 2-4, the mayor said. To accommodate the schedule, the council changed the regular council meeting to Feb. 10. In irrigation business, City Recorder Debbie Hansen said the city spent $66,000 to build one pond and $35,000 to clean the other pond. The council renewed another five-year contract for White’s Sanitation. Owner Max White said he bought the rest of the business from his father, Billy White, and would like to have the new contract in place to accommodate the bank from which he borrowed money for the purchase. White said he has served the city for 10 years or more and has kept the price down even though diesel fuel has risen. Out of the last 20 months or more he has only asked for a fuel increase for 11 of those months, he said. Five years ago he said he never thought fuel would raise more than $1.50 but now fuel is over $2. The new contract had some changes, White said, which included working holidays except Christmas and New Year’s Day. Councilman Keith Garth announced to the council that the state is pulling out of preparation for hazardous material spills. The county has been working on a hazmat team for some time, and Garth said he and Fire Chief Kevin Hansen attended a team meeting. A spill is not a matter of if but when, Garth said. Responsibility now lies with the six counties and the cities to prepare for spills, Garth said, and the cities will be the first ones on a scene. He said the local hazmat team would probably secure the site and do any necessary evacuations before turning an incident over to the federal government team. Each city is planning to train two people, Garth said. Grant money is available for training and equipment. He said another hazmat team meeting is planned for Feb. 29. Recorder Debbie Hansen told the council that the League of Cities and Towns legal council has asked the city to prepare a list of donations, assign values to them and advertise the list for 14 days. Part of Hansen’s list included the following: Miss Gunnison $50 per Centerfield girl; high school senior party $100; Shop with a Cop program $200; Sub for Santa $250; senior citizens $300; Gunnison pool $10,000; Gunnison recreation program $1,800; Gunnison Library $2,700; fireworks $200 and book mobile library $1,400. In other council business, council members discussed several animal-zoning violations. The council also renewed the $10,000 cemetery maintenance contract for Hansen Family Yard Care and passed a resolution transferring the TV cable system from Precis to Central Telecom Service.
