NEWS•BRIEFS COUNTYWIDE INTEREST Gift will bolster Snow nursing program WEDNESDAY, THURSDAY, JAN. 26-27 EPHRAIM— A $50,000 gift from an anonymous donor will create a scholarship endowment for nursing students at Snow Richfield. “We’re very grateful to the donor—who not only supports the nursing program but is giving significantly to the Sevier Valley Center,” said Michael T. Benson, president of Snow College. “Snow College needs to be the center of nursing training in Central Utah and gifts like this help make it possible.” Snow College now offers a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) class at Juab High School in Nephi. The CNA or Practical Nursing program is a prerequisite for entry into any nursing program and qualifies students to be employable at care centers. The course is also offered in Richfield, Ephraim, Delta, Fillmore and Tintic, Utah Additionally, a Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) certificate is available through Snow College Richfield and Ephraim campuses. Students attending either the Richfield or Ephraim campuses may obtain a Registered Nurse (RN) associate’s offered by Weber State through EdNet. Girl Scout cookies go on sale SALT LAKE CITY—Local Girl Scouts will sell Girl Scout cookies from Jan. 22-Feb. 6, 2005. “Our annual Girl Scout Cookie Program activity helps us make the Girl Scouting experience available to any girl who wants to participate,” said Elaine M. Gause, Chief Executive Office for Girl Scouts of Utah. All profits from the sales stay in Utah. Last year’s Cookie revenues were used to provide leadership conferences, adult volunteers programs and safety trainings, and enabled more than 3000 girls, including girls from under represented population areas, to attend camp and enjoy the outdoors, build confidence, gain new skills and make new friends. The Girl Scout Cookie Program helps girls develop skills they will use throughout their lives. “How many tasty products can you buy that have character building, teamwork and leadership baked right inside?” Gause said. Call for entries for Sanpete sweeheart contests MANTI—All girls ages of 8-11, and all young women ages 14-20 are invited to participate in the 2005 Sanpete County Jr. Princess and County Sweetheart contests to be held May 7. Royalty winners will be expected to represent Sanpete County Fair and Fair Board at all Sanpete County community celebrations, parades and rodeos. They also will be required to attend the Nephi Ute Stampede parade and rodeo as well as Salina’s Fourth of July parade and rodeo. Entry forms outlining all the requirements for both royalties can be received from Geri Brailsford in Manti at 835-8070. Jr. Princess applicants must be ages 8-11 by June of this year, and Sweetheart applicants must be between the ages of 14 and 20 by the same date. Contestants will be required to prepare a three-minute speech on the selected theme, “Back in the Saddle Again.” They will also, be asked extemporaneous questions, model selected attire, have personal interviews and demonstrate horsemanship, rodeo knowledge and horsemanship skills. Royalty winners will be announced at the end of each contest and will be awarded royalty buckles, crowns and prize money. All contestants will receive prizes and awards donated by county businesses and supporters. Entry forms must be returned to Geri Brailsford by April 30. Forest Service to hold conference Private individuals who own forestland are invited to a U.S. Forest Service conference at the Provo Marriott Hotel and Conference Center. PHOTO COURTESY AARON JUSTESEN SATURDAY, JAN. 29 The famous bucket of pennies Winning youth to perform in Eccles Center Grant Petersen of Manti, who recently generated a stir by paying a traffic fine with a bucket of pennies, has decided to donate the pennies to the Salvation Army. Sanpete County dropped his case, and he tried to sell the (in)famous pennies on e-bay for $25,000. Nobody bit on the inflated pennies, but Petersen did get a lot of requests from people who wanted to “see” the pennies. So for all to see, here is Peterson showing off his pennies. TOPS member reaches goal SPRING CITY—Local TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) member Jaycene Soper of Spring City recently achieved her weight loss goal. Soper had 15 pounds to lose when she moved to Utah in April, 2001. After losing the weight, she became a member of KOPS (Keep Off Pounds Sensibly). “Everyone was very excited for Jaycene who recently returned from a cruise and still managed to lose the last two pounds of her goal,” Carolyn Jensen said. To keep KOPS status, a person must maintain his/her weight between seven pounds below and three pounds above a specific goal set by the participant and his or her physician. Young artists to perform chamber music EPHRAIM—Fifty young musicians from throughout the state will provide an evening of chamber music at Snow College on Saturday, Jan. 29. The ensemble—the Young Artist Chamber Players—is comprised of young artists who are concertmasters or principal instrumentalists in their school orchestras, or who are state fair prizewinners. Several have performed as soloists with the Utah Symphony. Jack Ashton, a member of the Utah Symphony, will conduct the orchestra. Ashton is also the orchestra director at Olympus High School, where he received the Catalyst Award, which recognizes motivational and outstanding teaching. He is also the conductor of the Granite Youth Orchestra. The Young Artist Chamber Players gives concerts throughout the year in Utah, and are funded by private donations. They will tour throughout Europe this summer. The free concert at Snow will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Eccles Performing Arts Center. We Can Help.
