Wild Turkeys By Shanna Francis Ogden Valley News Staff Many visitors to the mountain benches and river drainages in Ogden Valley may be surprised to see a number of wild turkeys, a non-native species to the area. Lou Cornicelli, Wildlife Manager for the Utah State Division of Wildlife Resources, explained that the wild turkeys were stocked in the area by the division about 15 years ago. According to Cornicelli, Ogden Valley has a near perfect natural habitat to support the birds, which especially like to locate in the scrub oak and cottonwoods, and down in river bottom areas. The birds are native to the west— from Kansa and Nebraska to Texas. They are very winter hardy, and are hunted seasonally from early April to mid-May.
