While bus tickets, valued at $70. are primarily for getting to and from work, they can be used to travel around town. Thode said that's only one of the advantages. "I think the biggest advantage is (not having to deal with) parking on base, especially with the extra security," she said. "To be dropped off in front of your building and not have to worry about parking is a great thing and the government is paying for it." Brad Arnovick works in the Aircraft Directorate and has commuted via bus for five years. He said the first two years he worked on base he drove his vehicle, putting about 50,000 miles on the odometer and racking up fuel and maintenance costs. "(Riding the bus) saves me a lot of money and gives me time to read in the morning. If I'm tired I can take a nap and I enjoy the people that commute with me. It's a pretty good deal," he said. "And it's not as stressful and eases your mind." Vanpool members currently receive $65 of Defense Trail SMirtat ion Incentive Program encourages use of mass transportation by picking up bus ticket tabs and reimbursing some vanpool commuting costs. Federal employees and active duty military members are eligible for the program. Civilian Personnel Specialist Michelle Thode said 233 Hill employees are already signed up, and she anticipates more of the base's 20,(XK) workers will participate in the free program. The people that have signed up were already riding the bus. Now they're doing it for free," Thode said. "I think it's going to be an initiative for more people to ride, if they can save their gas money and get free bus tickets we (may also be able to) start more vanpools." Program applications are available in Bldg. 1245, Room 2 or on the Internet at www.saffm.hq.af.milaffsc. Civilian personnel should return forms to Bldg. 1245, Room 2 and military members to unit orderly rooms. Signed originals are required. Thode said January voucher forms are due ' gafe vouchers. In January, prices rise to $100. "(Commuters) turn vouchers in to the driver and at the end of the month the driver turns the money in to the UTA. It's almost like Monopoly money going back and forth," Thode said. If more Hill employees don't start riding the bus, the program may be completely converted to vanpools. Utah Transit Authority Transit Planner Ken Q "We've been meeting with the base to figure out some ways to provide service without tying up equipment," Anson said. "With buses coming up there half full, if it doesn't take off it's going to be hard to justify what we're doing now. We are anticipating (an increase but) we haven't seen it yet." Anson said three times a year UTA changes routes based on ridership. The next review is in December, but a final decision on Hill's routes will wait until April when the Transportation Incentive Program has been in place for several months. For more information on the program or bus Anson said there are currently seven bus In addition low routes arriving at Hill ridership numbers causing problems for the UTA, buses are driven by base employees for security reasons and parked on the base dur- routes, call Thode at Ext. www.rideuta.com. ing the entire work shift locking up assets. half-ful- l.
