Show The great and glorious Utah State Fair has been with us and gone, but the aftermath of the races is still the chief topic of interest to the horsemen, and one or two match races may result luring the next week. Messrs. Wells and Stone, the owners of the green pacer, Hobo, are far from satisfied at the easy manner in which Frank Will's Wil-l's Sarah Green put it all over the black flyer, and claim tney were "trimmed" both ways. A lumber of the local horsemen who had their coin up on Hobo are also sore and there is quite a bit of talk about clubbing in together and putting lp enough backing to compel Wilson to give Hobo mother match. Wilson, unfortunately, has too much money for the usual bunch, and says that flOOO is about the proper amount to start off with, md this amount makes the other owners look at Dne another dubiously. However, nothing definite will be done until tfter the return of the horsemen and their entries, svho have all gone to the meets at Blackfoot and 3oise, where the match may be pulled off at the atter city. Football goes off with a rush this week, games jeing booked for the University of Utah, Agricul-ural Agricul-ural College of Logan, National Guard, High School and All Hallows. The big contest of the iveek will be on Saturday, between the Aggies md the National Guard elevens. The last named lunch is made up of the former Y. M. C. A. team, ivho forsook the association during the week wing to a falling out with the new secretary, ivho seems to have an abnormal desire for what le terms "clean membership." He insisted that jver man who played on the team must be a jona ride member of the association, and would ,e obliged to pay their own dues. In former years, it this and other institutions of the same kind, it las been the custom to furnish athletes with free, ir athletic, memberships, until they have grown o expect that as a matter of course, as a slight ippreciation of their ability and hard work. It :ertainly has been the case in this city for some ime, but has now been declared off, under the lew regime. This rather displeased the football men, and, is most of them were already members of the National Guard, they went over to that organisation organi-sation and will play under that name in the uture. They have already defeated the strong ;leen of soldiers from Fort Douglas, by the overwhelming over-whelming score of 22 to 0, and have two games irranged with the Logan Aggies, and also con-ests con-ests with the University and High School. The naterial is there for a championship eleven, and, y constant work and good coaching, should trim iverything in sight around these diggings. The ;ame on Saturday will be played at Walker's jeld, commencing at 3:30 o'clock. The High Jchool team sprung a surprise on the Aggies last seek by holding the husky farmers down to a le, neither side succeeding in crossing its oppo-lent's oppo-lent's goal line. The High School was greatly JUtdassed in the matter of weight and strength. Jut over-confidence and sharp, snappy, nervy Jlajing gave them the best of the plaj The big ellows carried the oval Inside the five-yard line sut once, and then they were held for downs by 2ach Boyle's pets. This afternoon they have a &me with the University of Utah, and there Is i pretty good chance of another sudden awaken-ng awaken-ng among the lads over on the east bench. The jame will be played on the new campus. All Hal- Is also to make its first appearance on' the Sndiron this fall today, when the eleven will line JP against the Collegiate Institute at Walker's. Neither of these teams has worked out in public i'et, and many are the conjectures as to the ability abil-ity of each. There is nothing new in the baseball line with 4je exception that during the next week the fans :&ould know whether or not Salt Lake and Ogden ire to be members of the Pacific Northwest League 3et year. Buck Weaver, who is nursing a grained ankle at Butte, just at present, will re- K?aln In that part of the country and look after Je local interests at the Helena meeting, with Ke assistance of Attorney Clyde Shropshire. The KJIng is ready at a day's notice in both the -h cities, and their addition to the Northwest eague would mean great ball for the local fans. |
