Show AN AFFRAY. At Providence a few nights since an affray occurred in which Dr. H. G. Cannon was seriously bruised. It appears from the information given to us by disinterested parties that the boys of that settlement have for some time past taken pains to annoy and injure the doctor, and he in turn has been harsh toward them. By the advice of friends, however, he on several occasions, made complaint in the proper quarter and in the legal way, but could obtain no redress. This naturally exasperated him, and on the day of the trouble when the boys had been again disturbing him, he captured one of them, William Chugg, and administered corporal punishment. That evening William Chugg, Esq., father of the boy, accompanied by a man named Hyrum Skinner went to the doctor's house, called him out and used threatening language toward him. He started to attack them, but they overpowered him and inflicted a severe beating. One of the two struck him on the head with rocks, cutting two very painful gashes. They then left; and were afterward arrested and fined $15 each. Doctor Lamoreaux was sent for and he dressed the wound of the injured man. Though Doctor Cannon probably has been to blame in some respects, the burden of the offence must rest with the other party. |
