Nate Colbert played first base for 1O years in the majors and now acts as a consultant for the Thunderbirds. Colbert's name became synonymous with the young San Diego Padres. After coming through the St. Louis farm system and appearing with Houston, Colbert was San Diego's ninth selection in the 1968 expansion draft. A great fastball hitter with a strong, compact swing, Colbert devastated NL pitching, crashing 163 homers in his six season with the Padres. He led NL first basemen in assists in 1972 and 1973, and was an All-Star in 197173. "It's great to have Nate Colbert someone like that here who has a lot of knowledge and a lot of experience,· said SUU Head Coach Kurt Palmer. Palmer said that Colbert is more like a consultant than an assistant coach, who helps with the team's hitting mechanics. He shows up mostly at the games and gives his advice to f:lalmer on how the 'Birds could improve. Colbert was the Padres' offense in 1972, driving in 111 of the 448 runs the club scored, and, for the second time, belting 38 homers, more than one-third of the Padres total. On Aug. 1, in Atlanta, he hit five homers in a doubleheader to tie the record set by Stan Musial, and drove in 13 runs, the most ever in a twin b~I. Coincidentally, Colbert, a St. Louis native, recalls having been in the stands that day in 1954 when Musial hit the five homers. Colbert finished with a carrer-batting average of .243 in his 1,004 games. He hit 173 homers and had 520 RBI. Traded to Detroit in November of 1974, back problems forced Colbert's retirement in 1976 at age 30. Colbert now lives in Cedar City where he has his own business.
