BY MINDY SMITH JOURNAL STAFF WRITER BY NADINE BELL JOURNAL STAFF WRITER SUU's first Faculty/Student Research Day, which will be held tomorrow , will feature research projects in many different areas of study. The event will be held tomorrow from 8 a;m. to 5 p.m. in the Sharwan Smith Center Ballroom. Terry Schwaner, SUU associate professor of biology, said Faculty/Student Research Day is a chance for undergraduate students who are doing research under faculty member direction to show what they have accomplished throughout the year. SUU will host a seminar in conjunction w ith Faculty/Student Research Day at 12:30 p.m. in the Starlight Room. Douglas Burger, a professor of English at the University of Colorado at Boulder, and Helen Chuang, an assistant professor of biology at SUU, will speak at the seminar. Schwaner said one or two students who have done undergraduate research at SUU and who have been accepted to post-graduate schools in health sciences and graduate studies may speak at the seminar. Schwaner said some faculty members attended a research conference held at UVSC last year and the idea for the research day developed from that. "If this is successful, [the research day] will most likely be held in the future,· said Schwaner. Events for the day include: • An exhibit of research posters from 8 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. • Poster judging from 8:30 a.m. to 11 :30 a.m. • A luncheon for the participants from noon to 12:30 p.m. • Speaker presentations from 12:30 p.m. until 1:30 p.m. The final event for the day will be an awards ceremony. The awards will be given for the best research posters. Schwaner said 42 displays representing 61 students and 20 faculty members will take part in the day. The displays have come from a number of departments within the colleges of science, humanities and performing and visual arts.
