The timing is important, be- cause the Jewish observance of the Sabbath is tied to the Gregorian calendar's seven-daweek. Jews observe the Sabbath on Saturday, meaning that certain conventions of the High Holy Days are altered . slightly if the date of Rosh Hashanah or Yom Kippur falls on a Saturday. "This year, because Yom Kippur is on the Sabbath, we blow the shofar at the end of the service," Barach said. There are a variety of traditions associated with the High Holy Days. On Rosh Hashanah, families eat apples dipped in honey to symbolize the hope of a sweet year to come and challah, a Jewish bread. Challah is usually baked in twists, said Barach, but prepared round for Rosh Hashanah. "For all Jews," Bruce said, "it's a wonderful time of fabuy lous foods." A traditional greeting during Rosh Hashanah is, "May you have a good inscription." I believe a religious leader's first g obligation is to the of those directly under his leadership. He is obligated to teach and preach the Bible accurately, and sometimes this may involve current social or political issues. If current issues dan be dealt with from a biblical standpoint, then yes, he must speak out about what the scriptures say. As the hours go by, she said, participants begin to sense the completion of their spiritual cleansing, and an atmosphere of exuberance prevails. The air of excitement and anticipation also has a more simple element, Bruce said: "Everybody's stomach is growling loudly by then." The importance of the Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur is such that even those who profess Judaism only casually tend to be involved on some leveL Ludlow, who has been in Israel during the High Holy Days, said participation is more important for some Jews than for others. For many, the sacredness of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur demands deepest devotion to prayer, worship and reflec-- . tioa On the other hand, Ludlow said, "There are some who treat it merely as a vacation pe- Kippur. For most followers of the faith, that means no food or drink. Other, more specific abstentions perfumes and lotions, sexual relations, leather shoes, watching television, are frequently inshopping cluded as well "There are a lot of different interpretations, Barach said. The prohibition of leather shoes, he said, symbolizes letting go of worldly comforts, which is a general theme of the fast. Bruce said the prohibition on food and drink during Yom Kippur is "Nothing enters your mouth," she said. "You can't chew gum, you can't have a mint." Some Jews, said Bruce, interpret the fast so strictly that they walk on Yom Kippur instead of driving. Another important element of the High Holy Days is the Kol Nidre, a specific prayer given at the start of Yom Kip--' pur. The purpose'of the Kol Nidre is to annul personal vows undertaken during the previous year, thereby enabling Jews to recommit themselves to promises that may not have been perfectly honored. "It's .. the idea of wiping the slate clean, of starting out fresh," Barach said. Most of Yom Kippur is devoted to prayer services. Barach said it's not unusual for worshippers to enter the synagogue at 9 a.m. and remain until 8 p.m. with breaks of only 'X, , obituaries online to sign a Guest Book, find directions, donate to charities and send flowers. 4 & GROOM GALA Jewelers, caterers, honeymoon retreats, , florists, cakes and reception centers are the focus at ihe gala from 2-- 1 0 pm Sept 21 and 10 a.m.-- 7 pm BRIDE USS Canberra Rosh Hashanah takes in the first two days of Tishrii the seventh month of the Jewish calendar. The start of Rosh Hashanah is signaled by a blast on a sho far, fashioned from the horn of a ram. The shofar is sounded again at the conclusion of Yom Kippur, bringing the High Holy Days to a close. Barach said the sound of the shofar is piercing and distincd tive to its symbolic purpose. "It's a call to attention, a call to realize what's going on around you." Bruce described the shofar as sounding similar to a trumpet, and said that only a musician of great skill and impressive lung capacity can sound it. "It's a formidable instrument," she said. "It's extremely invigorating to hear it blowa" Rosh Hashanah lasts two days. Some religious holidays, Barach said, are celebrated for two days by Jews who live outside of Israel, but only one day by those in Israel Rosh Hashanah, on the other hand, is a two-da- y celebration everywhere in the world. Rosh Hashanah is often called the Jewish New Year, but Barach said that label is a misnomer. According to the Jewish calendar, which dates back to 3761 B.C., the current year is 5765.
