Show Germany Demands Her Colonies The colonial que.tion is again in the forenvnt, with Germany demanding de-manding the return of the colonies colon-ies taken irom. her at the conclusion conclus-ion of the Wcild War. The co'ij-tentkm co'ij-tentkm is made that President Wilson's fifth point, accepted along wih thirteen oth.is as the famous Fu. teen points preliminary to a treaty of peace, guaranteed "a lree, open-mind. d and absolutely impartial im-partial adjustment of all cclc.r.ial claims." When the war began Germany posessed a col-nial empire of 1,137,-894 1,137,-894 square miles, with a population cf 13,051,900 persons. Locattd in the tropirs, and unsuited for European Euro-pean settlement, the colonies had only 24,000 white inhabitants, including in-cluding Geimans and aliens. Her imperialists, nut satisned with it, demanded a "place in 1 the sun'' but at the end of the fighting the entire en-tire empire was distributed to various vari-ous administrations. The intrinsic value of the colonies colon-ies to Germany was very small. Their total trade ini 1913, the year before the war, amounted to $86,-000.000, $86,-000.000, or about one-fifth of one p r cent of the world total cf $41,-838,000,000. $41,-838,000,000. Only slightly more than a third of the ccloniei trade was with Gei-mnny and it amounted fa only six-tenth of one per cent of the total tradie cf Germany. Notwithstanding these facts the Germany cf today wants its colonies colon-ies reurned, more as a matter of prestige than anything else. Recently, Rec-ently, Dr. Hjalmar Schacht, Minister Min-ister of Economics, declared that "the future of European peace" depends upen satisfying the demand de-mand for the return of the overseas over-seas possessions. The report from Paris was that, under certain circumstances, cir-cumstances, France might consider handing back the share cf Togo-land Togo-land and Camereons, approximately approximat-ely one-fourth of the lost empire. While Dr. Schacht insists that Germany' economic existence depends. de-pends. upon colonies there is nothing noth-ing in the past to indicate any such importance attaches to the issue. However, it works t- create di cntent in Germany where privations pri-vations are explainrd by the lack of the former colonial empire. |
