Show Thursday, October 29, 2009 Schools The Gunnison Valley Gazette Page 7 Fundraiser is a success by CHRISTI GARFF GVHS Speech Team takes first place in tournament The Gunnison Valley High School Speech Team competed in a tournament on Saturday, October 25 at Snow College. The students attending the tournament and participated were Matt Mecham, Bridgette White, Ricardo Valencia, Barbara Weber, Kristin Hitchcock, Riley Benson, Katrina Simonsen, Tyrell Crane, Lyberty Peterson, Sam Hansen, Zach Bown, Adam Costa, Sage Lund, Dori Scharff, Chansey Caldwell, Ciera Christiansen, Trevon Hansen, Bailie Hamblin and Caleb Clark. The students moving on to finals were Zach Bown in two events, Sam Hansen, Tyrell Crane, Lyberty Peterson, Adam Costa, Brandee Watters, Katrina Simsonsen and Trevon Hansen. Students moving on to placing were Katrina Simonsen, placing 2nd in oration; Brandee Watters, placing 3rd in SPAR; Adam Costa, 1st place in SPAR; Zach Bown and Sam Hansen, 2nd place in Public Forum; and Tyrell Crane and Lyberty Peterson taking 1st place in Public Forum. The Gunnison Valley High School Speech Team ended up taking first place overall. Mrs. Lindy Brown, the student’s advisor, says, “I am so proud of these students. They have worked so hard and for most of them this was their first time competing. I am looking forward to a fun and successful year.” FFA competes at Snow Despite the flu that seems to be running rampant throughout the valley, the Gunnison Valley Middle School Theater Department’s fundraising dinner was a big success, with the middle school commons area filled to capacity Thursday evening. The fundraiser began promptly at 6 pm with a wonderful spaghetti dinner complete with garlic bread and brownie was provided by the Jaycees. All proceeds for the evening event will go to purchasing new microphones for the theatre department at the school as well as catching up on small budget over runs from past years. The event concluded with past musical performers coming back to reminisce about years gone by as well as perform favorite songs from past productions put on by the school. Justin Rico was the emcee for the evening with Dalton Burr performing Gary Indiana from the musical Music Man. Next were Kharissa All- Huggle. Justin Rico and Cassity Clayton returned to the stage, singing; If I were King, We’re Off to See the Wizard, and Somewhere Over the Rainbow. The evening concluded with a sneak peak at this year’s musical Pirates of Penzance. Drake Reynolds and Megan Yeager along with Nathan Lyons and numerous pirates filled the stage singing O False One and Pour oh Pour the Pirate Sherry. The Pirates of Penzance will take to the stage November 12, 13 and 14th at the middle school. The community is invited to attend. The second-annual Gunnison Theater Festival is set for November 12-17. This year it will be fun to be able to see two shows in one day. First the middle school will present the play Pirates of Penzance on the 12th and 13th at 7 p.m. and on the 14th in a 2 p.m. matinee. The high school play Footloose will open on the evening of November 14 at 7 p.m. and will also play on Monday and Tuesday the 16th and 17th. Pirates of Penzance is a very old show that is still very entertaining. A boy has been accidentally apprenticed to pirates instead of a pilot (the guys who steer ships). He is now 19 and ready to leave his apprenticeship and make his way in the world. Students starring in this show include Kaitlyn Bown as Mabel, Drake Reynolds as Frederick, Megan Yeager as Ruth, Garrett Sorensen as the Modern Major General Wyatt Neilson as the Head Constable and Nathan Lyons as the Pirate King. Footloose is a musical based on the 1980 movie by the same name. Ren (Dalton Burr), a city boy who loves dancing is forced to move with his mother (Clara Scharf) to his uncle’s house in a small town. He struggles to fit in, especially when he finds out that the town has a law against dancing. He butts heads with the law against dancing and therefore with the preacher who wrote it (Ashton Starks). Of course the law just makes kids itch to dance and there is plenty in this show. Red Ribbon essay winners Stephanie Spencer red and Hayden McAfee performing A Whole New World and Friend Like Me from Aladdin. Fiddler on the Roof cast members Nikala Allred, Sara Brown and Abby Lyons shared song favorites; Matchmaker, Far From Home, Do You Love Me and Sunrise Sunset. Logan Adams and Courtney Worthington performed Hard To Believe from the hit musical High School Musical and audience members were treated with the reuniting of Willy Wonka (Nathan Lyons) and those fabulous Oompa Loompas from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory for one more performance. Over 1700 students from FFA chapters across the state were in attendance. The Gunnison students did very well. Their Dairy Cattle Team, which includes Connor Dyreng, Damian Otten, Taylor Burrell and Paul Yardley, took 3rd place overall. Paul Yardley won 5th place overall in the Dairy Cattle Judging contest. Chad Boore won 4th place overall in the Ag. Mechanics contest. Caden Burrell won 3rd place overall in the Ag. Business contest. Congratulations to these students.
