Mayfield Maze by CARI HANSEN Rory and I got the chance last week to take our kids over to a local hay maze here in Mayfield. Our kids loved it! Cayden thought it was the greatest thing ever because he was able to beat us through the maze. It was awesome,” says five year old Cayden who thought it was ex- tremely funny when Rory and I got lost and had to backtrack. The maze is located just off of Main Street and 100 South in Mayfield. It is owned by Robert and Holly Sorensen. Robert was instructed by his college class to create an entrepreneurial business with less than $25 so he thought a hay maze would be great. With the help of his dad, Robert pulled over 180 bales of hay and with a little maneuvering a maze was created. Everyone is invited to check out the local maze at any time they would like. Night time is a great time to visit if you bring your own flashlights! The cost is a dollar per person and worth every penny. If you have any questions or would like to set up a group time, contact Robert or Holly at 528-7482 or 851-0204. Gunnison Valley Senior Citizens (The Recycled Teenagers) by REED ROBERTS The Gunnison Valley Senior Citizens held their monthly social on October 19, 2009 at the Centerfield American Legion Hall. There were approximately 40 seniors in attendance. We enjoyed a delicious meal consisting of homemade chili, made and furnished by Ace & Phylis Allred and Mike & Judy McMahon, homemade chicken noodle soup, made and furnished by Ernest & Joanie Larson and Jack & LuAnn Peterson. The rest of the meal was pot luck salads and deserts. It was absolutely delicious. A program was enjoyed by the group, consisting of some very interesting experiences by Coach Chic Hislop. Coach Hislop was the track coach at Weber State University for 38 years. He was also selected to coach the U.S. Track Team at the 1996 Olympics held in Atlanta, Georgia. His remarks were centered around a can of SPAM and the experience of a young man who was a track performer from a small college in Montana. Who, after training and competing for 20 plus years and four different Olympic trials and competitions, in an attempt to qualify and represent the U.S.A. in the Olympics, eventually he won 2nd place in the Hammer Throw at the 1996 summer Olympic games. It was a very interesting and touching presentation. By the way the can of SPAM was used as a prop. S stood for Super, P stood for Positive, A stood for Attitude, and M stood for mentally. Thanks to Ann Harrop, who is in charge of entertainment, in arranging for Coach Hislop to come and give this special presentation. By the way, Coach Hislop just happens to be Ann’s brother. Thanks again Ann, you do a terrific job getting great entertainment for our socials. This month at the October social, Ace & Phylis Allred were honored with a plaque and a thank you for all they have done and continue to do in support of the Gunnison Valley Senior Citizens. Also recognized and honored was Elma Peterson. She has provided a place for the ladies to continue quilting while the new Gunnison City Hall and Senior Center is under construction. Elma also contributes her time, her means, and her special talents in support of all Senior Citizen programs. She was presented with a plaque in special recognition for all she does for the Senior Citizens. She was supported that night by the presence of all of her children and their spouses. Thanks again Elma, you are a very special person in this Valley. The next social will be on Monday night, November 16, 2009 at 6 p.m. This is our Thanksgiving dinner. It will be held in the new Fayette Town Community Center across from the church. So come, you are invited.
