They're really good!” she says, laughing. She might as well be talkingabout “Lorna Doone,” a title that probably makes most Americans think of a shortbread cookie, not the 1865 English novel by R.D. Blackmore that once had a secure place on reading lists, A&E Network sets things right with a lovely three-hour adaptation premiering Sunday, March 11. And yes, it's really good. Set against the turbulent historical backdrop of England's lawless West Country in the 1680s, “Lorna” zooms in on three young people swept up in a tense emotional triangle; Carver Doone (Aidan Gillen, the original British “Queer as Folk"), ahotheaded and charismatic memberof an aristocratic outlaw family; John Ridd (Richard Coyle, “Topsy-Turvy”), a young farmer dedicated to avenginghis father’s death at the hands ofthe Doones; and Lorna Doone herself (Amelia Warner, “Quils"), who passionately returns John’s love butis pledged to wed her nasty cousin Carver as the “princess” of the Doone clan.
