Show HIS FIRST CASE. He was only a clerk in a lawyer's office, but the fleeting years had placed wrinkled on his brow and had presented him with a large consignment consign-ment of Ambition. When the senidr member of the firm was elected Senator from Utah over Judge Bennett, he decided that he wished to be consul at some distant port where living was cheap. He had many sympathetic friends, who informed in-formed him that in order to secure the place, he should exhibit his legal talent and "forthwith they provided him with a case. A man at Murray, Mur-ray, charged with criminal libel, arson and petit larceny, desired a change of venue. So the sym pathetic friends presented the ambitious clerk H with car fare, told him how to make the motion, f J H and eventually he started on the journey to han- ' , '. die his first case with considerable elation and' H confidence. fl Upon his arrival at Murray, the clerk was treated with overt suspicion by the wardens of H the village, and' was informed that no crimes were ( fl ever committed in that section and no such man fll as Black Murphy was ever heard of in Murray. rj H By this time the clerk's carfare was exhausted H and he journeyed to Salt Lake through several M feet of snow. H The next morning an attorney telephoned the M ambitious clerk that a man had been scouring f Murray in search of him the day before, and that as a friendly act he had gone to the court room in his place and secured the change of venue. H He announced, however, that as this had been 11 done purely out of friendship, the clerk was en- M titled to the attorney's fee, $50, which he urged his M clerkship to collect at once. The amount, he ( M stated, would be paid by the Bishop of Murray. fl So the clerk again grasped the Murray car, M but in the meantime sympathetic friends had M communicated with the constable of the village H and announced that a dark stranger, who was en- tirely daft would arrive there should and would , fl probably make an effort to collect money from the Bishop. H "Where does the Bishop of Murray live?" en- H quired the clerk of a dignitary in a slouch hat ' H who greeted him as he stepped from the car. H The stranger grinned until his face looked like ' ! " H the,. aurora borealis. "Right here," he stated, as , ; H he grasped the clerk and kindly but firmly and fl led him to the village -jail. The clerk pled sten- H toriously but without avail. H Eventually sympathetic friends reached the H constable by telephone and the ambitious clerk H was released. But the ambitious clerk never be- ' ' H came consul to Bingallng, and when his sympa- H thetic friends are mentioned he gnashes his H teeth so that the sound thereof may be heard H for miles and miles around.
