Show ADDED STATE FUNDS TO AID GRANITE Additional state aid authorized by the recent special session of the legislature will total 5195,827 or approximately $288 per distribution unit in Granite school district, it was estimated this week by Utah Foundation, private non-profit fax research organization. This estimamted allotment is Granite's portion of the $1,525,000 transferred from the mine occupation occupa-tion tax reserve fund in order to provide increased operating funds for the remainder of the current (1953-54) school year. Besides providing a district by district breakdown, the latest Utah Foundation release contains a complete com-plete summary and analysis of all recent school law changes. Foundation Founda-tion officials have announced that a copy of this report will be of- ested citizen of Utah upon written request. According to the Utah Foundation Founda-tion study, school operating funds for the 1953-54 school year equaled $4501 per distribution unit fn Granite Gran-ite district prior to the special session. ses-sion. Under the hew legislation enacted, the district next year will be able to finance a school operating operat-ing program of approximately $4935 per distribution unit without resorting to a special election. If voters approve at a special election, the district's budget could be as high as $5597 per distribution distribu-tion unit. , Utah Foundation calculations show that Granite district could finance a school operating program equal to that of 1953-54 with a decrease de-crease of 1.7 mills in the combined state and local property tax levy. The maximum without a special election could be financed in Granite Gran-ite district with a decrease of 0.4 mills in the combined state and local property tax rate. However, the maximum program with an election would necessitate a property tax rate increase of 5.1 mills over that of 1953. The new school program provides pro-vides additional eniinlizfltinn for most of the "poorer" school districts dis-tricts without increasing the total amount of state aid required. Foundation Foun-dation analysts state this is accomplished accom-plished by channeling a greater proportion of the available state aid to the needy districts and permitting per-mitting the "wealthier" districts to meet their own needs by local tax effort. |
